LEGACY TO THE CHARITABLE AID BOARD.
Avotiikr legacy of £400 has fallen to the Hospitable and Charitable Aid Board. The story is rather a, curious one. Some years : ago Mr. J. Strathern, inspector of the Board, found an old widow woman in Chancerystreet. living in miscrablo surroundings, named Mrs. Ann Gamble, the victim of drink, and likely to fritter her property away, and became a charge on the Board. 1 He induced her, in her sober moments, to make over hf-r property to him, in trust,' for her use during her lifetime, and the r, balance after her death to be given to the H Costlev Home. She was taken away from her miserable surroundings to the Costley | Hume some years ago, where she received every comfort and luxury the medical officer I ordered. When Mr. Strathern was on a - visit to the Home a short time ago he asked § her if she desired to come out, and she ro» ; plied that she did not, and was sorry she'? had r.ot gone to it years previously. ' Lat- 'I terly. she has been frail, and confined to % her bed, dying at last at the age of 83, of old age, having received every care and at- % tent-ion from the authorities of the insbitu- ; tarn. She will be buried to-day beside the-*'' remains of her husband, the late Mr. John Gamble, who was buried in the Anglican! Cemetery, Symonds-street. When Mr. $ Slrathern took thi management of her pro- f perty he found two mortgages on it, but has I cot tiiem p?id off. Through his action the Board conps into possession of £400. on I which, probably, a Government subsidy of '• a like amount will be obtained from' tho f Government by the Board.
