A NEW INDUSTRY.

QUICKSILVER AT THAMES. % The cinnabar (quicksilver) ore exhibited ' 1 in Iho window of Messrs. Beale and Co., # Queen-street, yesterday, attracted a deal of •£: attention. Some of it is very rich, being %- worth, it is said, £50 pei ton. Samples are &- shown from the outcrop, .vhieh present a IS' weathered or oxidised appearance, while fp. that from underground, some 40ft, looks |/J softer, hut is equally rich. From our ad- I vertising columns it will be seen that a com- iff. party is being formed to work the cinnabar ■ deposits, called tho Thames Quicksilver 4j''Mines (Limited), the first directors of which Sjj' are Mr. Win. Gorrie, Mr. Robert Fenwick, Mr. Graves Aiekiti, and Mi. R. R. Hunt. Tho capital is £6000, in 120,000 shares of £1 each. One-third goes to the discoverort of the miue in paid-up shares, and the bal- ;% ance of the shares are now offered to the M public. A small sum in cash lias also to be ./'• paid to tho vendors. Tho property con- 3E sists of 94 acres, held under a mineral lease from tho Crown at 2s fid per acre, merging -J} into one per cent, royalty on the value of S the ore at the pit's mouth. The capital will igS be employed to further prospect the pro- Sf perty and erect the necessary kiln for -Jjv vapourising tho mercury and condensing it iD a thin sheet-iron condenser, with water trickling over tho outside of it. New Zealand ,~i£has the advantage of having plenty of water, . unlike Mexico, where water has often to he coined on mules' hacks to the condenser, ■•?£ and considering the facilities existing in New Zealand, the new company should be alilo to "j----save a ugh percentage from the ore. Three $ favourable reports are attached to the pros- | pectus by Mr. Alexander McKay, Government Geologist, Mr. Rundall, an cxnert. in ? mercury from Mexico, and .Mr. Daw, general? manager of tho New Zealand Crown Mines,' who alt consider the property well worth J; prospecting. The markets for quicksilver' will be New Zealand and Australia, and also ' China, which absorbs 15,000 flasks per. annum. Quicksilver is largely a mononoly -J held by the Rothschilds, ,who own the" Atmaden mine in Spain, which has a history §> of over 2300 years. It is said that one- % per cent, of emnabai will pay the working# expenses, and as a report from the Thames " School of Mines shows that specimens of this ore selected by the director, Mr.' l'\ B. # Allen, ran from 0.3 to 27.5 per cent, of '>e cinnabar, it appears that there is a good future before the Thames quicksilver mines.
