RETHENCHMENT.

TO THE EDITOR. I , Slr ' — Your correspondent, " Ono Interested, is evidently very much interested indeed in the abovo subject, for, from the tone of his letter, the shaft has plainly struck homo. If the facts were unjruo, they were taken from the corresnondence in the papers and from my own personal knowledge of the matter. I still maintain that Mr Gulliver was unjustly treated, and the majority of the publio say so too, for it has never been proved yet that he was wrong. Again, I did not say that men were engaged by the Council to hold permament positions, and nobody but a nincompoop would read it that way. If a man is not engagod to mako up tho rolls there is already a man picked out for the billet, I have not tho slightest doubt. I merely wished to know where the retrenchment came in, as thesemen have to bo paid whether they are engaged temporarily or not, and so much talk lias been made about what good the Council was going to do with such a worthy Mayor. Ho the Town Clerk. My statement was not really untruo, for tho Council mado the same blunder as myself, for there cannot possibly be two town clerks appointed, for the Municipal Corporations Act has made no provision for that, mid the Council was not justified in appointing another town clerk while Mr. Philips had loavo of absence. Being away from Auckland at tho time of Mi. Gulliver dismissal, I was surprised on my return to hear that the citizens of Auckland did not tako the matter up and demand English justice, for ho has many friends here, and many whom ho has befriended in various ways. Xo man with any spirit would stay on and do a year's work for three month's' salary, and notwithstanding that he resigned, I am told on very good authority that ho offered to complete the valuation list for tho year, but the Mayor never brought it forward. Ho was evidently not studying tho ratepayers or ho Would have taken the offer. -I am, etc., Faibpui.
