FIRE AT DEVONPORT.
At half-past two o'clock yesterday morning a firo broko out in an eight-roomed houso at Melrose, Devonport, occupied by Horr Ziralnermann, and owned by Mr. J. 0. Spinley, of Victoria Road. Tho fire evidently started in the diningroom, and when discovered nad taken a strong bold on the building. It was first noticed by Mrs. Zimmermann, who, on getting up to attend to her child, found tho diningroom in flames, and aroused the oilier inmates of the house. The alarm was at once given, tho Melrose bell being rung first, without much effect, and afterwards the larger bell near tho wharf. Tho brigade, under Captain Strode, turned out promptly, and got a steady stream of water on to tho burning building, which by this timo was a mass of flames. ' Eventually the fire was got under, but the house was completely gutted, and is practically destroyed. The house is insured in the South. British Company foi £250, but it is not known whether an insurance policy on the furniture still holds good, as it was taken out some timo back in another part of the borough, and it is doubtful whether duo notice of removal was given. Very few of Herr Ziinmermann's effects were saved.
