BOROUGH COUNCILS.
NEWTON. The Newton Borough Council met as usual last night at the chambers, Rose Road. Mr. J. W. Shackelford, the Mayor, presided, and there were also present: Messrs. Warnock, Brinsden, Sexton. Anibury, Donald, Brown, Davenport, and Stewart. It was agreed to accept the invitation of the Exhibition Executive to take part in the procession on opening day. On the motion of Mr. Ambury, tlio Mayor was appointed to represent the borough at the election of a representative to the Charitable Aid Board.
ONEHUNGA. The fortnightly meetimr of the Onehunga Borough Council was held last night, when there were present: His Worship the Mayor (Dr. W. R. C. Erson), Messrs. Fleming, iStoupe, Shaldrick, Laking, Hill, and McLeod.
The Forthcoming Exhibition: On the motion of Mr. Fleming, it was resolved to request the Mayor and town clerk to accept an invitation to represent Onehunga at the forthcoming Auckland Exhibition. A Proposed Gift: The manager of tho New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Company wrote asking tho Council to accept of allotment 23, seotion 20, as a free gift. It was resolved to accept the offer if the transfer deeds are included in the gift. Right-of-Way: The Streets Committee recommended that a right-of-way, as applied for by S. Yaile and Sons, be granted in Church street, the work to be done according to the conditions prescribed by the Council. The recommendation was carried. Water for Mount Smart: Mr. Biss, District Engineer of Railways, wrote with reference to a proposed water supply for railway engines at Mount Smart, statin? that, as the extension of the main along Churchstreet would bo advantageous to the Council, it would seem unreasonable that the Department should bo expected to hear the whole cost. He also asked for permission to fix a pressure gauge at the end of the main in Church-street, and to take the necessary readings. The lettor was referred to the Water Committee, with power to act. Water Tank: In answer to objections made by the Mangere Road Board, and the Onehunga Borough Council, to the water tank recently erected near the Mangere Bridge, Mr. Biss wrote suggesting that the fence of the railway bridge lie close-boarded at a height sufficient to cover the tank, and so prevent horses from shying. If the local authorities in question agreed to the proposal, he would get the work done immediately. It was resolved, "That owing to the number of accidents that have occurred sinco the last communication to the railway authorities, this Council will not be satisfied unless the tank is either removed, or a closeboarded fence is erected on both sides of the bridge 6ft high, for a distance of 60ft. Finance: Tho treasurer read his usual financial statement, which is as follows:— General account, debit balance, £180 14s 2d; waterworks account, credit balance, £23 5s 8d; recreation reserves account, £20 19s Id; contractors' deposit account, £20; domain account, balance in bank, £10 12s; due from the last-mentioned account to the general fund, £86 lis lOd. The Mayor moved, "That the town clerk place before this Council at the next meeting, the exact amount as to which the waterworks is indebted to the general account of the borough of Onehunga, and, further, that it be an instruction to the borough treasurer to take such steps that whenever the credit balance of the waterworks account is in credit to the sum of £50, that amount shall be transferred to the general account, until such liability owing by tho waterworks fund be liquidated." The resolution was agreed to. Noxious Weeds: A letter was received from the executive of the Auckland Provincial Agricultural Association, drawing the attention of the Council to the spread of thistles and other noxious plants on the public roads, and asking the Council to do all in its power to mitigate the evil. The letter was referred to the Streets Committee. Notice of Motion: Mr. Fleming gave notice to move, "That the name of the Waikaraka Cemetery be altered, and that it bo renamed the Onehunga Publio Cemetery-" New Building Regulations: A special meeting was hold at the conclusion of the ordinary business, to confirm the now building by-laws. On the motion of the Mayor, tho by-laws wore confirmed, and ordered to be advertised, according to law.
