VOLUNTEERING NEWS.
No. 2 New Zealand Rifles held a smoke con-
cert last evening, at the Albion Hotel (Mr. Walsh, licensee), when a very pleasant evening was spent. There was a large representation of officers, non-commissioned officers, and men of the various corps present. Mr. E. Ford (ex-president of the New Zealand Natives' Association), presided, and I Captain Oakes occupied the vice-chair. ! Among the guests was Captain Baurne, of I No. 3 Company, New Zealand Native Rifles. I There were several toasts honoured during ! the evening. Captain Baume, in a fervid I speech, urged the volunteers to be true to | duty, and not " play at soldiers," but to re- | member that duty came first and foremost, • and should be so fulfilled as to reflect credit upon themselves and upon the country. I During the evening a very pleasing cere- | mony was performed by the chairman. I namely, the presentation to Captain Oakes, | on behalf of the members of his corps, of a ! photographic shield of the members of the ! company. Captain Oakes returned his I thanks, in feeling terms, to the company, for ■ the honour they had done him. | The election of a junior subaltern, nf No. I 1 Company of New Zealand Native Rifles, i took place last evening. There were two | candidates, namely. Colour-Sergeant Eastj gate and Mr. S. Marks. The latter was I elected. It is rumoured that the election is I invalid, as it is alleged that there were not two-thirds of the members of the company I present, as required by the regulations.
