On the motion of the Mayor (Mr. Wm. Scott), seconded by Mr. Davy, a hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Mr. McGowau, M.H.R., for the successful manner in which lie succeeded ip getting both Bills passed by Parliament. Tbo very interesting ceremony of laying a memorial stone in connection with the erection of the Wesleyan new Sunday - school building in Pollen-street took place this afternoon, the stone being laid by Mrs. James A. Miller, of Parawai. Prior to laying the stone Mrs. Miller was presented by the Rev. S. J. Serpell with a very handsome silver trowel, which bore the follow ing inscription:—"Presented to Mrs. J. A. Miller by the trustee and teachers on the occasion of laying the memorial stone of the Thames Wesleyan Sunday-school building, November 3, 1898." Addresses were deivered by the Revs. H. R. Dewsbury, W. r . Williams (of Auckland), and S. J. ierpell, whilst the Revs. J. Mackenzie, W I. Woolley, and F. J. Boyes also took part n the proceedings. There was a very largo issemblage of the public present, and special hymns were sung by children belonging to the school. The ceremony passed off very successfully, and during the proceedings i collection, amounting to £39 7s 6d, wa token up on behalf of the building fund It may be mentioned that the memoria stone was presented by Messrs. W. and C , Thomas, of Auckland.
