Sydney, November 3. The new duties came as a surprise to com« morcial circles, but are generally well received.
• In the Assembly Mr. Lyne said he would oppose the tea duty, but could say nothing against the others, which were an unauthorised appropriation of his own policy. If Mr. Reid chose to be a protectionist so much the better for the Opposition, and so much the worse for the Premier's previous professions. A considerable section of the fret-trade party were dissatisfied.
Sydney, November 3. The Labour party bitterly opposed the new duties.

TUBERCULOSIS IN CATTLE.

The Premier intends to appoint a com> mission to inquire intt the question of tuberculosis in cattle.
RICH GOLD FIND,
Sydney, November 3. There is great excitement in Bathurst owing to a rich gold find at Chambers' ' Creek. The gold is exposed on a reef 2ft> wide, which resembles a jeweller's shop. The stone is literary hanging together with gold. It is said to be on the same line of the reef as that where Holterman's famous £20,000 nugget was found. Assays show 230z to the ton.
