THE MAIN TRUNK LINE.

PROPOSED MEETING OP THE AUCKLAND MEMBERS. '

[It TEUSGRAPH.-SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, Monday This morning I spoke to Sir Maurice O'Rorke, regarding the resolution of the recent mass meeting at Auckland, that he should call a meeting of the Auckland members to consider the North Island Main Trunk Railway question. Sir Maurice <=aid he was m entire sympathy with the claims of Auckland to have this line completed, and would have much pleasure in calling the representatives of the Auckland and Taranaki districts together. The meeting will take place in a day or two. It should be a very influential one in view of the fact that no Jess than three Cabinet Ministers are interested, viz., Messrs. Cadman, Carroll, and T. Thompson but it is quite certain that the agitation mil come to nothing unless the members concerned are prepared to take united action and to insist upon justice to Auckland in this matter, by their votes as well as by their voices, and make the construction of the line superior to all questions of party politics. Un ess this stand is taken the Minister for Public Works will put the matter off in his usual way, by stating that there are a large number of other unfinished ines in lie same position, and all must be treated alike. This has been one of his exrases so far for doing practically nothing, and be need not fear the consequences so long as Auckland members refuse to sink all minor differences, and hesitate to force the hand of the Government by combined action The Minister for Lands is in favour of the Central route with a good road connecting Stratfor with one of the stations on the me. This road would be about 50 miles ong, but 25 mies of it have already en formed and met, led, and if the House™ d agree to a sufficient vote the road could be finished by the end of next summer. This suction is almost certain to receive the hearty support o the Wellington membe s whereas it the other route is insisted on the Wellington vote will probably be hostile
