RAILWAY PARCEL RATES.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,— that the new parcel rates are out one can form a definite opinion as to the much talked of reduction. It will surprise some people who are, like myself, in the habit of sending small parcels by rail to find that the principal reductions are in the rates for lines over 200 miles, which, of course, does not apply to Auckland. Formerly I could nd a parcel to Manurewa or Papatoetoe for 9d, weighing 561h, now it is Is 6d; if 841b for Is, now 2s; if 1121b Is 3d, now 2s 6d; or just double the old rate, AS they are reckoned as 30 miles. To Pukekohe, which is 31 miles, and therefore under the 50 miles rate, a parcel of 561b was Is 9d, now 2s; if 841b 2s 3d, now 2s 9d; if 1121b 23 9J, now 3s 3d. It would seem from this that the problem has been how some rates in the South Island could be reduced without incurring any loss of revenue, but it is a very discreditable proceeding and ought to have the immediate attention of our representatives in the North Island.— I am, etc., T. V. Spedding. Karangahape Road. March 16,1897.
