CROWN LANDS AND TIMBER SALE.

These was an unusally large attendance at the sale of Crown lands and timber conduoted by Mr. Gerhard Mueller, Commissioner of Crown Lands, yesterday forenoon, at the Customs Buildings, including several representatives of the timber trade. The most important sale was that in the Auckland Girls' High School endowment (Maungaru survey district, Hobson County), consisting of 4780 kauri trees, containing about 17,062,015 superficial feet, and 173 totara trees, containing about 234,561 superficial feet, the whole, which realised £95SS > 4s lOd, was purchased by the Kauri Timber Company, Limited, and a sale of such magnitude seems to indicate a renewal of prosperity in the timber trade. The prices of the lots were as under :—

Lot 1. 1166 kauri trees, containing about 3,674,031 feet; 91 totara trees, containing about 121.518 feet: total, 3,795,549 feet; at upset price £2055 18s 6d. Lot 2. 612 kauri trees, containing about 2,082,924 feet) 53 totara tree?, containing about 68,131 feet: total, 2,131,055 feet; at upset price £1154 6s 4d. Lot 3. 2670 kauri trees, containing about 10,184,988 feet; 25 totara trees,'containing about 39,152 feet: total, 10,224,140 feet; at upset price, £5538. Lot 4. 332 kauri trees, containing about 1,140.072 feet; 4 totara trees, containing about 5760: total, 1,145.832 feet; at £840; upset price £620 135. The Board makes concessions in the way of grants of the use of 10-acre sections for the erection of mills and labourers cottages, but otherwise the sale conveys no surface rights, the Board reserving to itself the right to issue prospecting and kauri gum licenses. A number of town and rural sections were also disposed of as under:— Lot 4, containing 4a 3r lOp, in the parish of Omaha. Rodney County, was purchased by Mary Sadler at the upset price, £3 3s; lot 5, containing 5a lr 16p, in the parish of Mangatawhiri, was sold to J. Graham, junior, at upset price, £5 10s; lot 6, containing 16a, in the Whangaroa survey district (Block VII.), found a purchaser in Elizabeth Ann Hayes at upset price, £16; lot 1, in the township of Tokatea, and lot 2, in the town of Hamilton East, were passed in, and lot 3, suburbs of Newcastle North (Ngaruawahia), was withdrawn from sale. A section of six acres in the village of Grahamstown was sold to Mr. E. Earle Vaile at upset price, £18 ; three sections of five acres each in the parish of Waikomiti (suburbs of Avondale South) were knocked down so VV. H. Smith at upset price. £20 each, and one section containing 4a. 33p., in the same locality, went to Charles Moore at upset price, £16 155. Sections 85 and 94 of lot 3, village of Leigh, containing 2r, each, were sold at upset price, £10 each to E. H. Harper and W. T. Wyatt, respectively. Sections 350 and 352, containing la. each, in the town of Kihikihi, were purchased at upset price, £5 each, by M. 8. Laurie, Several sections in lots 1, 2, and 3 were passed in, they not : realising upset price.
