INSPECTOR OF MINES.
I MR. JAMES CODTTS APPOINTED. [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT,] Thames, Friday. For sevoral weeks past, owing to the resignation of Mr. J. Cow for the purpose of joining the Anglo-Continental Gold Syndicate (Limited), the Hauraki Goldfiolds District has been without a Mining Inspector. To-day, however, the Minister of Mines (the Hon. A. J. Cadman) announced thai) after due consideration Mr. James Coutts had been offered and accepted tlio appointment, Mr. Coutts, it will be remembered, had been, until about nine months ago, a resident of the Thames for a very lengthy period, during which time ho held the management of some of the most prominent of Thames mines, the last one being the Victoria Gold Mining Company's property, In June last, howover, Mr. Coutts resigned the management of the property mentioned in order to assume the management of the Taicapu Gold Estates Company's property at Nelson, and under his guidance great strides have been made in the development of that proporty. It is needless to say that the selection of Mr. Coutts for the vacant position has giveu the greatest satisfaction here, for that gentleman is an experienced miner of high standing, and is possessed of a thorough knowledge of the resources and requirements of the district that no outside person could possibly have. Mr. W. Potts, president of the Thames Miners' Union, whose name was mentioned in connection with tlio above appointment as being a likely candidate for the same, has been offered the appointment of Assistant Inspector under Mr. Cochrane, Mining Inspector of the West Coast, but he has nob yet signified his acceptance of the same.
