New Zealand Herald Office, Thursday evening. The murket hai been quiet lor investment stock during the past wck, with few transactions reported, quotations remaining about the same. Sellers ol South British are asking £2 8s ex dir. Devonnort Steam Ferry are offered at £1 12s Gd, with buyers at £1 lis. There are buyers ol Northern Steam at 7b 4d. Hikuratigi Coal are offered at 9s, with buyers at 8* 6d; sellers of Taupiri at £1 4s Gd, buyers £1 Us 9d. The mining market has been fairly actire, and in several stocks there has been considerable fluctuation, leading to a largo volume of business, Thames stock have been in good request, ami Adelaide sold from 2s 4d to 2s 9d. Alburnia East have been dealt in very freely from 10d to Is 4d to la '2d. City of Auckland sold at 2s 2d. A steady inquiry for Hazelbanks. sales being effected Up to 6s 9d. Towards the close of the market May Queens firmed up, sales taking place from lUs 6d to lis 9d. Moanataiaris have sold at from 18s Cd to 19s 9d to 19s. The market closes with firm buyers of New Alburnian at 5s 9J. In Upper Thames stock the market has been quieter. Waihi-Silver-tons have sold at £2 10s; Waihi Consols at Is fid and Is 3d; Waihi South at 2s 8d and 2s sd: Talismans at 16s and 15s 4d; Imperials at 2s 4d and 2s 3d; Hercules at Is 2d and Is Id. As the market closes there was a strong demand for Alberts (Tairua), with sales from 2s Id to 2s 7d. A considerable amount of business in Harp of Tnra, with sales from Is 4d to Is 9d to Is 2d. In Coromandel mines Bunker's Hill have sold at 03 3d. There has been a good inquiry for l'onr-in-Hand at about 2s 9d. Pride of Tokate* have also been in request, sales being effected up to 3s. Welcome finds have sold at 4*, and Zealandias at Is lOd. Very few transactions in Kuaotunu stock. The call for space has exceeded the original expectations ot the promoters; and, as all ground at disposal is taken up, there 13 every prospect of a successful display. Auckland firms will, no doubt, provide some creditable exhibits. The Indramayo is due at this port next week, and will keep up the influx of supplies. Importers should note that the Pakeha is now loading in London, to sail for Auckland direct about the end ot October. Deliveries ex Regent Murray place Black Horse salt once more on the market. The Alice has arrived with ketcseile, and will relieve immediate necessities in that line. Her consignments are going promptly into consumption. Rice continues scarce, ana is firmer in price accordingly. Late advices confirm the advancing tendency in quotations for hardware _ lines, notably in bar iron, train rails, plain and galvanized wire, barbed wire, ctc, The butter export season is now opening. Initial shipments are goia/t forward per s.s. Aotea this week. Owing to recent shipmmits from the South being comparatively small, there is a strong demand for potatoes, which rule at £3 15s to £4 ex store, In view of the approach of the new cron, produce merchants are inclined to limit orders to actual requirements. The position in maize is somewhat improved. Supplies have not been excessive, and arrivals have found ready sale at 2s (Id on wharf. Oats stand at recent quotations, but are likely to advance if a demand sets in from Australia. Milling wheat: Southern holders are asking an advance, but buyers meantime aro not inclined to give it. Sales therefore are restricted to thofee only who are actually compelled to buy. Fowl whoa/: There is more sol line. Bran and sharps are dull of sale. In the local produce market there is no change to report, prices being Host dairy fresh butter, 0d ; second quality, od ; and third quality, 4d lb wholesale. The following are the quotations for the kauri gum market for the week ending October 14,1896 Poor ordinary, which comprises weak and rough-coated nieces, pickings, and washed nuts, £22 to £&>. Ordinary, meaning hard, rough-scraped gum, varying in price according to the quantity of washed nuts, £30 to £32. Good ordinary, meaning hard, unpicked range gum, price varying according to size, scraping, and freedom from weak pieces, from £38 and upwards. Re-scraped, £80 and upwards. Supplies for 14 days of October, 200 tons. Business generally remains very quiet. In East Coast no sales have been made, holders refusing to acccpt the offers made. Sellers are inclined to hold for recent figure, but there are none offering such terms. Though still dull, more business was done last Week than formerly. The Amei'ioau demand is quiet. Supplies continue small, and the quality of the gum is good. Some roscraped and good bush gum has been sold, also some superior black. BY TELEGRAPH. FROZEN MEAT MARKET. Napier, October 15.—The Colonial Consignment and Distributing Company cabled to Nelson Brothers to-day that stocks of frozen meat of all kinds are very heavy. Sales last week were a little below the estimate. Today's quotations are:—Beat Canterbury mutton, 3Zd per lb; Dunedin, 35d: Napier and North Island, 3gd. LONDON. Forty quarters of chilled Queensland beef have arrived sound, but are of wretched colour. Experts regard the shipment as a failure. , COLONIAL PRODUCE. London*, Ootober 14. The Agents-General, convened by Sir S. Samuel, at the instance of Mr. Playford, discussed the propriety of applying for the repeal of the duty oh dried apricots. Mr. Playford said Califotnian dried fruits paid duty, though preserved goods were fret. It was generally agreed that the alleged injustice to the Australian article was Unfounded, and the Agents-General reSolred to cable to their respective Governments to that effect before interviewing Mr. Clamberlain.
