AUCKLAND HARBOUR BOARD

An ordinary raeoting of tho Harbour Board was hold yesterday afternoon. Present: Mosgrs, G. S. Killing (chairman), W. J. Napier, M. Niccol, R. Farrell, U\ liunson, J. J. Craig, J. J. Holland (Mayor),

risk Notices.—Notices td mariners wero receivod from the Port, Officer, Calcutta; Marino Board, Port Adolaido; and Department of Porta and Harbours, Brisbane.

Lhsiituousks, Etc.—Mr. G. Aickin forwarded a list of lighthouses, lightships, etc., in Chinese waters, which was ordered to be acknowledged with thanks.

(iootis at North Shore.— Devonport Borough Council, in reply to the Board's request to allow goods blocking the wharves at the North Shore to be temporarily stored in the oil Admiralty shod, stated that the required permission would bo grantod,

Touting on Wharves.-(J. Fagan, on behalf of a number of cabmen, asked the Board to bring in a by-law to regulate traffic and touting on the wharves. The matter was referred to tho Finance and |yfts;al Committeo.

Unlimited Rafts.—Mr. J, L. R. Blooinfield wrote complaining of an unlimited raft of timber being left at night almost under the bows of the yacht Viking ; and it was only owing to the exertions of the man in charge of the yacht that serious damage was averted. Tlio matter was referred to the Finance and Legal Committee. Use OF Ai.lotmk.vt.—Mr. J. T. Julian was granted the uso of allotmonb IQ4, Custom-street East, during the erection ol a building on an adjoining allotment. Exchange.— The Resident Engineer of ■Railways askod the Board to exchange an allotment so as to enable the approach to the railway stati'm to be widened. Referred to Finance and Legal Committee.

SITK FOR Boatshkd. —An application from tlio Devonport Borough Council for a site near tho Admiralty Reserve, North Shore, for the erectiorj ef a boatshed, was referiod to the Works and Tariff Committee.

Reports.—The recommendations of the Works and Tariffs Committee ro O'Connor's account, repairs to weighbridge, receiving cargo on wharves, shod accommodation on the old ferry tee, re arrangement of offices, and new jetty off Quay-street, were all agroed to; also the recommendations of the Financo and Legal Committee re accounts, storago charge of Messrs. Ehrenfried Bros., draft of agreement between the Board and Mr. D. Ross, overtime of enginoer of dredgor No. 121, roadway at Freeman's Bay, advertising on wharves, Montgomery's claim, case against the steamer Hnwko's Bay, by-law re vehicles on wharves, and boatahed in Judge's Bay. Calliope Wharf. - The Finance and Legal Committee recommended that the previous resolution of the Board, ro alterations to the Calliope wharf, be rescinded, and that) tho £100 subscribed by reside nto in tho locality bo returned. Mr. Nicool stated that it was probablo that alternative proposals would bo submitted to the Board by tho parties interested, who asked tho Board to retain the money in tho meantime, so as to enable a meeting to be hold on this subject. This was agreed to.

Whistling at Wharves.— Tho Harbourmaster drew attention to the danger attending tho blowing of whistles at the wharves. A number of accidents had already occurred by horses bolting, through being startlod by the whistling. The matter was roforred to the Finance and Legal Committee to draw up a by-law to deal with the question.

Tenders.—Tendera were received from Messrs. Alex. Watson, E. Garrett, and J, White, for repairs to wharves and jet ties, and they were referred to the foreman of works to work oub aud see which was the lowest,

Drudging.—On the motion of Mr. Kissling it was rosolved, " That the Works and Tariff Committee bo requested to take into consideration the present arrangements with regard to drodging and reclaiming, with the view of ascertaining if they can recommend to the Board un improved system of carrying out these works."

Report.—A lengthy report was received from the foreman of works, regarding his visit to the various Southern ports, and it was decided to have the report type-written, and supply a copy to oach motnber of the Board.

Freeman's Bay Reclamation.—An informal discussion took place on a question by Mr. Napior us to whether the Board had ever resolved to retain possession of the allotments on the water frontage at the Freeman's Buv reclamation. Mossrs. Kissling, Niccol, Guosoti, and Craig held to the opinion that tho idoa of the members of the Board was that the intention was to protect its riparian rights. Messrs. Holland, Farrell, and Napier, however, held a contrary opinion, and the chairman ultimately decided that notice of motion would have to be given on tho subject beioraanything could he done.

Miscellaneous.—'Tho seal of the Board was affiled to conveyance arid agreement) between the Boar I and the Gas Company On oho recommendation of the Harbourmaster, it w.1,3 abroad to obtain furthor appliances for lifo-savmg and recovery of bodies about the wharves. A letter from G. Holme? mki.ig for employment was received ; al«o a letter from R. Jonkinson re the use of pumice in wharf construction. Ait application of J. Shove to occupy allotment 95, Customs street, fit a rental of 10d per month, was declined.
