Proas Association.—Electric Telegraph.—Copyright* A VICTORIAN TRAGEDY. Melbourne, March 18. A murder has occurred at Canadian, neat Ballarat. Mrs. McCarthy was alone in hei house, and when her son returned he found her dead in a cowshed, with two deep wounds in die head and her leg broken. During the day the woman had been visited by two neighbours, Bridget Sherman and Alice Trait, and they had been drinking together. Both have been arrested on the charge of murder. An axe was discovered hidden in a track, and which had recently been cleansed of stains supposed to be blood. CHARGE AGAINST A SOLICITOR Melbourne, March 18. Mr. Geake, a well-known Daylesford' solicitor, has been arres on charges of converting trust moneys of clients to his own use. A large number are said to have been victimised. The amount involved 13 many thousands, in sums ranging from a fow pounds to nearly four thousand. Geake, till recently, was a lay reader in the Church of England, and President) of the Christian Endeavour Society. SOUTH AUSTRALIAN MINISTRY. Adelaide, March 18. The Hon. J. V. O'Loghlin, M.L.C., has been appointed Chief Secretary, vise bha Hon. J. H. Gordon, resigned. LONG JUMP RECORD. Sydney, March 18. Ab St. Patrick's sports yesterday, an Irish amateur named Roseingray put up a record in tho running long jump, covering 22 feet 10 inches. The previous record was 21 fceb 5 inches, held by Ryan, New Zealand. THE CYANIDE PROCESS. Melbourne, March 18. The resident director of the Australian Gold Recovery Company has received a cable message from the owners of the MoArthur cyanide process in America, stating that they obtained an injunction against the Mecur Gold Mining Company of Utah, preventing the infringement ol the patent, which was declared valid. DEFECTIVE BUNKERS. Melbourne, March 18. Mr. Pafcon gave evidence that the bunker supports of the steamer Wendoureo were so rotten that the bunkers were likely to fall in and injure the men in the stoke-holes.
