Rome, March 12. Menelik is willing that Italy should retain the Mareb frontier line.
Negotiations for peace have been opened, and the departure of the troops has been postponed in consequence.
Baratieri is prostrated physically and mentally. He admits that in a moment of rash impulse he gave the orders to attack, hoping the Slioans would retire and enable the Italians to obtain provisions, and thus avoid having to re< treat to the coast
Rome, March 14. Menelik reviewed 100,000 fighting men in the presence of the Italian Envoy. They were all well-armed, and the commissariat showed an abundance of provisions. The Chamber of Deputies regards the action of Menelik in insisting on the retention by Italy of the Mareb frontier line, and forbidding the erection of for* tifications as humiliating to Italy.
London, March 12. The Lord Mayor has declined to open a fund for the wounded Italians.
St. Petersburg, March 13.
The Moscow Gazette says that Russia will not consent to Menelik being crushed.
