| duced contract price for railway cartage; also that the rata on the Lyttelton-Christ-chucli line should bo made proportionate to tint on the Dunedin-Porb Chalmers line. At ptesent merchants had to pay the whole cost )f discharging ships after five p.m., and ii was asked that they should be called upon to pay only the difference between day aid overtime rates. Mr. Cadman said that dnce lie took office a reduction had been nada in cartage charges. Ho held out no hope of a reduction being made on the Lyttelton-Christchurch line. As to oTortimo nil Lyttolton tho workers had asked that tho handling might be let by contract, ho had undertaken to go into the whole Hatter.
