THE TAKAPUNA JOCKEY CLUB'S SUMMER GATHERING. SECOND DAT. The second and concluding day's racing in connection with the above club's summer meeting was held on Saturday last, in beautifully fine weather, which, though rather warm, was tempered with a cooling breeze. The attendance was quite up to the average seen at the marine suburb's gatherings, but of course bore no comparison with the large assemblage present on Anniversary Day. As on the first day the Deronport Perry Company handled the visitors without a single hitch, and in a manner that reflected considerable credit on the management. The meeting as a whole was satisfactorily conducted, though the lodging of a couple of protests during the afternoon, one of which resulted in a race being run over again, prevented the programme concluding to advertised time, the field in the last event being despatched almost an hour after the time set forth. Mr. R. Wynyard, the dub's popular secretary, acquitted himself of the arduous duties pertaining to his office in a creditable manner, and the same applies to Mr. F. Marks, clerk of scales, and the several other officials connected with tho management. The decisions of Mr. J. 0. Evett, who occupied the judge's box, were given with promptitude, and to the entire satisfaction of the public, whilst with the exception of the unfortunate circumstances surrounding the send off of Admiral Hawke, in the first race, for the Hobson Handicap, Mr. E. D. Hals tend despatched the fields in his usual capable manner. Mr. Knight's weighting proved correct, and the number of closely-contested events witnessed during the afternoon reflect credit on that gentleman's adjustments. The catering, in the hands of Mr. Thomas McEwin, was quite up to his usual standard of excellence, and the programme rendered by Impev's well-known band enlivened tho afcomoon g proceedings. The totiilisators were manipulated by Mr. \V. Blomfield and an efficient stall, who handled tho sum of £4832 without an error, which nmouut, added to the figures of tho first day, presents a total of £10,244, an increase over last year's returns for the two days of £253. Before the meeting opened tho protest entered by Mr. J. Lennard, on Anniversary Day, against Hall, the rider of Evo, for alleged striking of Fabulist across the head with his whip, in the Takapuna Cup, was heard by the stewards. After taking considerable evidence, the protest was dismissed, Hall being cautioned. The racing opened with the Maiden Handicap Hurdles, for which the eight acceptors figuring on the card weighed out. Economy was served up a hot favourite, but came to grief at the second fence, and Lifebuoy made the running for the first round, when Carbuncle closed up on the field. At the hurdlo below the stand Fishorman fell, and at the back stretch Lifebuoy and Mount dislodged their jockeys, the race from this out resulting in a struggle for victory between Carbuncle, Ika, and Glenlora, endiug in a meritorious win for Mr. J. H. Martin's game little mare by a couple of longths. A field of seven faced the starter in the Suburban Handicap; and Peerless, who went to tho front as the barrier flew up, was nover headed, eventually winning comfortably by about two lengths from the much-fancied Doris. Of the Eleven liliputians who contested tho Pony Handicap, Cupid and Mavourneen were the public selection. Kit and Cupid got best away, and the pair retained their positions at the head of affairs round the back to the home turn, where Mavourueen came out, and a splendid struggle between Kit and the first day's winner resulted in a win for the former by half-a-leugth. Seven went to tho post for the f|l akapuua J O. Handicap of lOOsovs; and Three Star, who got well away, made the running for fully seven furlongs with Eve and St. Regel as his nearest companions. At this stage St. Clement's dashed up on the inside, and, assuming the lead, looked all over a winner as the field entered the straight, but about 50 yards from home Anita shot out with a magnificent run, and tackling the favourite, won ail exciting battle by the narrow majority of a head. Five two-year-olds faced the barrier in the Hobson Handicap, for which Lady Anna found most support, but Admiral Hawke, who got away several lengths to the good, was never headed, and passed the winning post six or seven lengths in front of Nestor. Great dissatisfaction was expressed at the result, and the j.ublic clamoured for the race to be run over, ami a protest was lodged against the event going to the Admiral, on the grounds that he was in front of the barrier when the starter despatched the field. After lengthy consideration, aud a deal of evidence being taken, the stewards notified the owners that the race would be run over again immediately after the Steeplechase, it being shown to their satisfaction that tho horse had been in front of the post at tho time of starting. Iu the meantime Admiral liawke was taken away from the grounds and was not a competitor iu tho run off, and the sum of £.';3 which had been invested on the colt was accordingly returned. The money on the remainder of tho field was retained, and when the totalisator was reopened another £45 was invested, which resulted in two distinct dividends being paid out on Nestor, who won the run off, one of £3 9s to original speculators, and £2 to those who subsequently invested when the machine was re-opened. The second race was a splendidly-contested one, the quartette of juveniles getting away to a splendid start. Porangi Potae made the running round the back and into the straight, with St. Elmo, Lady Anna, and Nestor in close company. An exciting struggle from the distance was witnessed, and Lady Anna and Nestor coming to the front, the pair shot past the post almost locked together, the verdict going to the latter by a bare head. The poor field of four contested the crosscountry event, which was looked upon as a pood thing for Bombardier. Early in the race Disturbance refused the post and rails at the top of the hill behind the staud, thus leaving only three to fight out the battle, of whom Othello formed the best, winning rather easily from the North Shore gelding by about four leuths. The winner was at the head of affairs throughout the whole journey, and although J. Rae, who rode a -judged race in Bombardier, made a splendid effort to overtake the light-weight for fully five furlongs on the fiat, Mr. Skipwith's blaok gelding staved off the opposition. From the start the pace was fast, and the time recorded for the three ana a-half miles, 7m. 12s, presents a record for the Takapnna cross-country event. The field of the day (thirteen) weighed out for the Borough Haok Handicap, which resulted in a three lengths' victory for Commodore over Merry Maid, the winner, who wa« ridden under the whip for the greater part of the journey, coming away from his field as they reached the home turn, and winning rather easily. A protest was lodged by Mr. T. Hodgson, owner of the second horse, Merry Maid, against tho stako being paid over to Commodore, on the grounds that the winner had crossed his maro as they entered the straight, and taken up her running. The evidonce taken was strongly in favour of the protest, which was ultimately sustained, and the race awarded to Merry Maid. Commodore's jockey was disqualified from riding for a mouth. The concluding event of the gathering, the Anniversary Handicap, brought out & field of eleven. Miss Nelson, who held a prominent position throughout, was only three parts of a length from St. Kegel, after a splendid struggle with St. Regel, Doris, who was a hot favourite, having to cry content with third place. The following are the particulars of the racing Mimes Handicap Hurdles of 36sots ; second horse to receive ssovs out of stakes. The Tauranga Jockey Club's Meeting wm held on Wednesday evening, when nominations were received for the various handicap races. On applying to the secretary for an official list, he declined to give it, and the nominations so far are kept a secret. The reason of this unusual proceeding is stated by the secretary to be that half the nominations are unaccompanied by the fee, and the defaulters in this respect have been notified that unless the fees are received by mail to morrow their nominations will be invalid. This procedure causes great dissatisfaction amongst local nominators, who have paid their fees with their nominations. The unusual procedure this year is stated by the secretary to be because last year a number of Auckland horseowners defaulted, and a list of them has been gazetted.
