FIRES.
• [by telegraph.—press association.] Christchuhcii, Sunday. At twelve o'olock on Saturday night three cottages in Wordsworth-street, Sydenham, were burned down. One was of six rooms, owned and occupied by William Rogers, a stoker ab tho Gas Works; another of throe rooms, belonging to Charles Boder, and occupied by George McNicol; and the third of six rooms, owned and occupied by George Russell, a cooper. The fire began in a wall near a chimney in Kogori' houso. All the contents of this building were destroyed, The furniture of tho others was saved. Rogers' house was insured for £150 in favour of the Building Society in tho Commercial Union, and the furniture for £50 In tho Royal. Boder's house was insured for £100 in the National, and Russell's house was insured in the Alliance Offico for £150. The cause is supposed to be accidental. At a quarter to two on Sunday morning, a fire broke out upstairs in tho men's clothing department of Mr. G. L Beath's shop in Cashol-street. D was confined to the department in which ib originated. Not much damage was done to the building. The damage to the stock by water was considerable. Tho cause is not known.. Dunedin, Sunday. ' A seven-roomed house owned by James Farrell, at Gabriel's Gully, was destroyed by fire. The house and contents wore insured for £200 in tho Now Zoaland Offico. Farrell states that he lost £50 in notes and coin. Ho had some difficulty in getting oub his sister, an elderly woman. The fire is supposed to have been caused by a gust of wind blowing down the chimney.
