ATHLETIC CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING.

[by telegraph—press association.] Christchproh, Saturday. The seventh Annual Athletic Championship Meeteng was held in Lancaster Parklthis afternoon. The day was hot, with light breeze which freshened alittle at times, and everything was favourable for good performances. Tho sport however was rather tame, as tnostof the events could be picked beforehand, and thoro were few close finishes. For some time not oven tho standard was beaten, but this was eventually accomplished in the Pole and Long Jump, and the Qnartor-mile Hurdles, and equalled in the Quarter Flat. In the Quarter Hurdles Roberts, of Auckland, repeated his previous world's record of 61s. Tho most admired runnor of the day was young Bonnet, a lad of 20 from Dunedin, who carried the Mile and the Three-mile in excellent times with the greatest ease. In him and Low the Southerners possess a fine pair of runners, who will mako things merry for the Australians next week. Had Bennet been pushed he would probably have established a new record for the colony in the mile. Tho arrangements were complete, and the events were got off fairly promptly, but the starting was not good, Mr. Webb keeping the men too long on the mark. Theattendance was not up to expectations, being at tho outsido only 1500. As was expected, Canterbury won the banner. Both this province and Dunedin scored fivo firsts, and Auckland four, but Canterbury secured the largest number of seconds and thirds, and came out on top with 53 points; Dunedin, 38; Auckland, 29; Wellington, 14; Wanganni, 7i ; Nelson, 4J; West Coast, 1. One of tho few surprises of the day was H. M. Reeves de- j feat in the 250 yds by Kingston. eves had done the distance in a second or more less in his trials, but collapsed when challenged, and could barely get second. Jjow, for the the third year in succession, won both the quarter and half-mile. The following are the (lotails 100YDS.-Ringston and Hayward won tho first heat in 11 l-sth s.; Patrick and Robinson the second, in 10 3-2 th s. Kempton was scratched. In the final, Kingston got away badly, and finished behind Robinson, Canterbury, and Patrick, Wellington. It was evident from the Dunedin man's running in the 250 yds afterwards, he would have had a big say in this event but for his bad Btart. Robinson only beat Patrick by 6 indies, the closest finish of tho whole day. Timo, 10 3-sth B. . HALF-MILE i lat. — Low, D" n ™ u, « 1; Grierson, Canterbury, 2; Stuart, \\ elliugton, 3. These were the only starters, lho champion lay behind till 200 yds from homo, when he ran to the front, and won rather easily by syds. Stuart was quite outpaced. Timo, 2m. 4s. , . . . Hion Jump.—Brown, Canterbury, 5 feet 61 inches; Bailey, Wanganui, 5 feet oh inches; Westenra, 5 ieet 5$ inches. Kinsley also competed, but failed at 5 feet 4i inches Bailey and Westenra tied for second place, and tho former won the jump off. Bailey explained his unexpected defeat by the fact that tho light dazzled him, and ho could not see the bar properly. Milk Walk.-Creamer, Auckland, I; Maxwell, Dunedin, 2. Creamer went off with the lead, and came in 100 yds ahead of Maxwell. Smithson, Canterbury, the only other competitor, spurted to pet second place, but broko, and was disqualified. Time, 7m. 10 1-fo- . ~, , 120 yds Hurdles.—Martin and Harley won the first heat, 175., beating Cole and Bailey ; Moore and Roberts won the second in 164-ss. Piercey also ran. Martin, Auckland, 1; Moir, Canterbury, 2; Roberts, Auckland, 3, Moir ran very determinedly, but Auckland got in front at the last hurdle but one, and won by nearly two yards. Roberts was a bad third. Time, 16 3-s*. Throwing Tnr. Hammer.—Brown, Canterbury, 89ft Gin Louisson, Canterbury .S3 ft Gin; Wachsmanu, Canterbury, 78ft 2in. Rhodes, Wellington, was scratched, preferring to keep himself for the weight putting. This tnadn a rift of ten points to Canterbury, but the throwing was poor, being a long way under the standard. 250vns Flat.—Broad and Kingston won the first heat in 27 2-ss, Robinson third; H. M. Reeves and Balch won the second in 27 3-55., Patrick third. Reeves won bo easily he looked a certainty for the final, but 15yds from homo Kingston dashed to the front. Reoves spurted but could not stick to tho Dunedinite, who, to tho surprise of all, maintained his lead and won by half a yard, Broad clone up third. Balch did not finish. Timo, 27 4 53. Oskmilk Flat.—Bennett, Dunedin, 1: Clark, Canterbury, 2; O'Connor, Auckland, 3, This brought out seven mon, the others being Divio*, Bell, Wood, and Thomas. In i the third lap Bennett worked his way to the front, and followed by Clark led the rest of the distance. Two hundred yards from the tape Clark made an effort, but the Di'nedin champion drew away with ease, and won by 10yds in tho line time of 4m. 31 3-ss. The winner, who is a small-looking slight-built lad, was warmly applauded. Polk Jump.—The only coinpetititors were Kingsiey, Wanganui, and Hunter, Nelson. They tied at 10ft Sin, which is live inches above tho standard, and then attempted to surmount 10ft 7in, which would have beaten tho New Zealand record. After five attempts each both failed, and agreed to divide the prizes. Three-mile Walk.—This was a gift to Creamer, who beat his only rival, Maxwell, liv more than a lap, nearly 600 yds. Tune, m 59 3 ss. , „. , Pcttin'O Weight.—Rhodes, Wellington, 35ft. 9in, 1; Lotiisson, Canterbury, 33ft lOin, 2; Blown, Canterbury, 32ft 2in, 2. The best of these was fifteen inches liolow the standard. QiwERMaE Himmzs,-Roberts. Auckland, 1; Martin. Auckland, 2; K. lurley. Canterbury, 3. Moir, Canterbury, sisn ran. but was quite out of ir.. Tin; Auckland Ep-ir led from the j imp, and the most [arlov could do was to make a fair spurt at the finish, which soon died away. Roberts won by four yards, and had he made morn speed would have created a new record for tho world. Time, 61s. Tiirkf.-milr Flat.—Bennett, Dunedin, 1; Bell, Wellington, 2; Hawthorne, Wellington, 3. This event brought out another good field of seven, Davies, O'Connor, D. Wood, and Thomas also facing the starter. Most of them, however, found tho pace too hot. Wood disappeared after the first milo, and Thomas shortly after. At the beginning of the fifth lap Bennet deprived Bell of the lead. Davis put on a epurt and ran into the front, but pumped himself and fell out. O'Connor also found the going too good for him, and at the beginning of the sixth lan Bennot, Bell, and Hawthorne alone wero loft in. In this order thoyran the remaining laps, but the Dunedin lad was gc<ng with a beautiful strido and easy swing that betokened something out of the common. Bell stuck gamely to him, but in the end was left 15 yards behind, tho same distance between the two Wellington men. Time, 15m, 30 3-sth s>., only 3-slhs. above the standard. As before, the youngster's performance was warmly applauded. Long Jump.—Cuff, Canterbury, won this with the good performance of 20 feet 7i inches, which is littlo above the standard, Piercey, Canterbury, was second, with 20 feet 2 inches; and k Macassey, Dunedin, third, with IS feot 9 inches. Broome, Wellington, and Moir, Canterbury, also competed, but their best was 18 feet 2 inches. Macassey was at a disadvantage, having an injured foot, and in the last jump lie sprained it again, and had to bo carried off the ground. The last item on tho programme was tho Quarter-mile Flat.—Low, Dunedin, 1; Balch, Canterbury, 2; Mowbray, 3. Thomson, Stuart, Grierson, and Bassott also ran. An uneven start gavo Stuart and Low a lead of some yards, Grierson and others being left on the mark. Grierson made a good effort, but could never catch Low, who maintained his advantage and won by six yards. Balch ran into second place in the last few yards; and Grierson and Stuart, fallen back beaten, allowed Mowbray to score a solitary point in favour of the West Coast. Time. 525., which is the standard, and 1 3-ss. below tho record.

[BY TELEGRAM —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Christchurch, Saturday. Frank Creamer had no difficulty in winning the two walks. Ho hopes to be in better form next Thursday, when tho race between Goodwin and him will he very interesting. Martin and Roberts both ran exceedingly well in tho two,' hurdles. In the 120 yds Martin jumpod well, but Roberts blundered several times, and just managed to scramble In third. O'Connor ran very well in the mile, doing it in 4m. 375., and finished very strong. Jones was right off. He seemed very weak, and the pace for the first two laps in the Mile was too warm for Davies. Ho did not run up to training form. We are all staying for the Australian meoting.
