THE AUCKLAND RACING CLUB'S MEETING.

NOTES AND ANTICIPATIONS. [by phaeton.]

The Auckland Racing Club will inaugurate their Summer Meeting to-morrow, and should fine weather prevail it would seem safe to predict that the attendance will attract ono of the largest, attendances t'nt has ever assembled at Ellerslie, for it may safely bo said that on no previous occasion havo matters from a sporting point of view horno such a roseate hue as they do in connection with the "Cup Meeting" this year. The openness surrounding the issue in the various events, but more particularly in connection with the Cup, will serve to infuse great interest into the racing, and if the Club is only fortunate in regard to weather, the meeting should prove one of tho best that has ever been held in Auckland, And now I suppose I must address myself to tho task of endeavouring to assist my readers to solve the knotty problems which attach to the various races of tho first day's programme Trial lla.ndic of lOJsovs. Seven furlongs. st lb st lb Musketry .. „ 8 9 Lord Diniluco . ! 0 Fabulist „ „ 8 7 Miss Nelson „ 012 Doris — ..8 1 Merry Maid .. 612 Acona „ ~7 II IleartofOak «. fi 8 First Nelson „7 8 Frontignae,. „6 7 Captivity _ ...lb Cominodoro ..0 7 Armour ,» .. 7 0 Miisketry, Fabulist, and Doris read to me most dangerous for this race, and to select one- from tho trio, I shall plump tor Doris. From what 1 have seen of the Southern pair in their training work, I should take Uniform to bo the best. Defiance, who is a nice cut of a colt, had all the best of his stable mate Daring in a solidly run gallop yesterday morning, and the Dreadnought colt accomplished his task in a manner that entitles him to a prominent place in the summing up on this event. Armilla won a couple of good races at the Second Spring Meeting last month; and in tho interval the daughter of Castor has gone on the right way, indeed in her training work she Ims not run one inferior gallop so far as I can ascertain. Sho must therefore be very dangerous. St. Paul has been doing all right in his work ; and so also has Antares. It will therefore be recognised that the issue in tho two-year-old race is pretty open. However, I think I cannot do butter tliau select Armilla, naming Defiance and Uniform as hor most dangerous opponents. Auckland Cur of COOsovs. Two miles. Horso. Weight. Uaiumond First Nelson.. „6 10 .. .. — Y.iiiunorscliooiior ..0 7.. .. — St. Hippo has boon a hit of a conundrum to the course-watchers during the past few days. On Saturday last ho registered a most inferior gallop, in fact it was so bad as to place nis Cup chance in quite an outside position However, on the following Monday he performed much better, while yesterday morning lie ran a mile and a half trial in a satisfactory maimer. I did not myself see St. Hippo's latest performance, but reliable judges estimate it satisfactory, as the time was good, and he finished well. Now, that the man training St. Hippo knows the dilferc'ico been a and a bad performance is a pent that will ho genoiallv admitted; and as the top-weight has been backed front the 'per quarter there isstrong inducement to folk the "tip;" but I will myself elect to Mitt a different course. The Possible has come on splendidly during the past week, and, I think, I am safe in saying that |ie will bo the best conditioned horse in tho race. The son of Nordenfeldt seems to stay all right, and the gallop which ho registered yesterday morning in company with Oscillator ami Quiltiri was of such a satisfactory nature as to win over the waver-TS, (amongst whom I was numbered myself to his chance). Impulse moved freely yesterday morning in his gallop, but I hardly think he can be dangerous, and I shall require Pegasus to wipe out that wretched piece of form which he registered at Takapuna before again standing him. Folly has mado a good recovery from the injury which she met with at Takapuna, and she may bo said to be as well as ever she was; but, game little mare though she is. I fancy she is held safe by tho length of the journey. Dreamland has come through a searching preparation, and tho daughter of Cadogan has acquitted herself in a manner that shows she can get the two miles all right. There is just a danger that a light boy may not bo able to hold her togather; but should this be accomplished I fancy Dreamland will at least tret into a place. Quiltiri has been galloped on several occasions with The Possible, with the result that the latter has always got home iu front; and the manner in which he faded out yesterday morning would appear to point to his being held quite safe, framing gallops have, however, may times proved unreliable, and history may repeat itself in Quiltiri's case. First Nelson, Anita, and Yammerschooner can, I think, b; written out without any ceremony. In summing up the whole matter, I must say that the support awarded to St, Hippo has in it the elements ol a strong " tip •" but from what I have seen, and trusting to my own judgment, I think lam warranted in casting my vote in favour of The Possible. HISTORY OF THE AUCKLAND CUP. This year's Auckland Cup marked the 22nd contest that has taken place for the Ellerslie race. Tlie largest field that has contested tho race is 15, which number went to the post in 1885.
