REPORTED ERUPTION ON THE EAST COAST.
Captain F. Cankse, of the Now Zealand Shipping Company's steamer To Koa, which arrived from Wellington yesterday, reports that on Wednesday morning, whon a few miles to the northward of Tologa Bay, bo observed what appeared to bo a volcanic eruption some miles inland. The To Koa was about ten miles off the land at the time, and the attention of Captain Caneso was attracted by a largo column of smolco and fire which suddenly shot up into the air to a tremendous height. It had all the appearance of a sudden rush of steam, etnoke, and flame, the latter of a variety of colours. Captain Canese does not think it was a bush tire, but inclines to the idea of a volcanic eruption. Tho direction in which it was seen would bo somewhere about tho Urowera Country.
