NEW SOUTH WALES BEATS CANTERBURY. [by telegraph—press association.] Christchurch, Wednesday. An hour and ahalf's play to-day sufficed to finish the crickot match, New South Wales v. Canterbury, tho former being victorious by six wickets. The weather was again phenomenally hot, with brilliant sunshine. Walford (notout, 82) and Poidcvin (not out, 15) took their stands at the wickets at 2.40 p.m., with about 200 spectators on the ground. Play started slowly, Walford feeling his way carefully, evidently in view of reaching three figures. Pearce and Wilding had charge of the bowling at the start, but, although Pearce was very steady and the fielding good, runs came along very surely. Walford gave Fowkeasharp ohance off Pearce, but attained his century. After that he played with more freedom, and being well supported by Poidevin, despite innumerable changes in bowling the score was taken to 222, or within seven of victory before A. Ridley smartly caught Walford in the slips off Cuff: 222—3 —122.
