THE AWAKINO ROAD.
OFFICIAL EXPLANATION. [BIT telegraph—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, Friday. With reference to the reportod stoppage of fclio Awakino Road, I have Been those in authority, and tho following may bo taken as the views of the Minister and the Department on the question "lb is quite true that the engineer in charge of the works has boen requested to slow down in consequenco of the large expenditure now going on there, which will probably be more than can bo met) by the votes given by Parliament, bub io is not the intention to entirely cease operations on the road. It will bo carried on as fast as the funds at our disposal will permit. We are slowing down everywhere, and wo have to slow down on this work as well as on others. It is an important road. We are very anxious that it should be put through, not only because it is a through road to Auckland, but also because of the large extent of settlement going on in that valley, and the considerable area of Crown lands which have now been acquired in the interior and on or about that line.
