BOROUGH COUNCILS.
PARSE The regular meeting of the Parnell Borough Council was held last night, Mr. G. S. Kissling, Mayor, presiding. There were present: Messrs. Thornes, Savage, Briggs, Pollard, and Wright. Messrs. Wm. Thomas and John Page, who had been re-elected, and Mr. John McConnell a former member, who had been elected at the recent election, made the statutory declarations, and took their seats. They were welcomed by the Mayor, who, however, expressed regret at the Council having lost the services of Mr. Withy, Miscellaneous. — Several alterations in names on the Burgess Roll were allowed. Mr. W. S. Cochrane, on behalf of the church trust, decliued to allow a pound •to be erected on the Fire Brigade station ground near Bishopscourfc. The Town Clerk of Auckland intimated that it was reported to him that Mr. Hugh Campbell was building a stone wall across a public road abutting on the Domain, and asking if ha had the permission of the Parnell Council. A demand was made on Mr. Campbell to remove the wall. A letter on the subject was received from Mr. Campbell. He explained that previously there was a straggling fence there which was never objected to. He had removed a nuisance, and when the Counoil desired to open the road and would treat all ratepayers alike, he thought in all fairness it would be time enough to ask for the fence to ba removed. The road referred to, the Mayor explained, was running at the back of Mason's Gardens, between itaud the Domain, but hitherto it has been used by persons having adjacent properly. The Mayor said it was time the Council asserted its rights, and he moved that the Town Clerk be instructed to ineiaton the removal of the obstruction and write to Mr. Campbell accordingly. Mr. H. Campbell applied to the Council to expedite the laying on of the water supply to his new house in Manukau Road. Ik was agreed to lay a three-inch pipe along Maun sell Road forthwith. Mr. H. W. Hudson applied to have a culvert in Chirtsey-street diverted, as it was now discharging into his allotment. Referred .to the Streets Committee to report. The Public Trustee wrote re the drainage at St. Stephen's Road in the estate of M. V. Brackenbury, tenanted bv Mr. E. Morton, as it was a source of danger to health. Referred to the Streets Committee. Finance. —The statement of bauk balances submitted was as follows General accouut, cr., £274 9a; water supply, cr., £277 4s 4d ; drainage loau, cr., £174 Os 7d ; waterworks, loan, cr., £295 3s Id. Accounts amouuting to £179 Os 2d were passed for payment.
NEWTON. The usual fortnightly meeting of the Newton Borough Council was held last night in the Borough Chambers. Present: Messrs. Shackelford (chairman), Davenport, Webloy, Brown, Lee, Ambury, Wright, Donald, Wilson, and the town clerk, Mr. J. Carrie. A vote of thanks was passed to the two excouncillors, Messrs. Holdon and Watson for their services to the council. Messrs. S. J. Ambury and S. C. Brown signed the usual declarations on taking office, and were welcomed by the . chairman. A request from Superintendent Fenton, of the Fire Brigade, for eight undress uniform caps, was granted. The plans and specifications received from Messrs. Boylan and Lundon for the proposed drainage of Rose Road and McKelvie-street were placed upon the table, discussed, aud approved of. It was decided that the work should be dona by the Council's own men, and that the Rose Road portion of the scheme be commenced immediately. Accounts amounting to £32 14s lOd were passed for payment The following committees were elected for the year Streets: Messrs. Weblev, Ambury, Lee, and Warnock. Finance: The Mayor, Messrs. Davenport, and Brown. Legal : Messrs. Shackelford, Donald, and Wilson. The foreman of works' report was received and read.
