GOLF.

The championship of the Auckland Golf Club, carrying with it a prize and the possession of the vice-president's gold medal for one year, was played on Friday, May 24. The medal must be won three time 3 before it becomes the property of any player. It was expected that the hon. secretary of the club would return the lowest scores, and the expectation proved well founded, for on the aggregate score of four rounds he obtained the commanding lead of 22 strokes over the second man. The course was very heavy owing to the large amount of rain during the early part of the week. A heavy dew lay on the grass till about twelve o'clock owing to there being no wind, and this probably accounted for the large scores returned in the first rounds of the match. The greens, which were very fast and in good order, reflected great credit on the green-keeper. The scores returned, with the exception of the lowest score and the two highest (cards for which were not returned), were very close, and the result shows that there were five or six members between whom there was very little to choose for second place. The winner played very steady golf. His score for the first round was somewhat spoiled by his ball lying in a small hole on the edge of the sixth green. He had to play four strokes to get out of this hole, and played ten for the hole. Mr. Gillies' score for the four rounds was as follows —

First round .. .. 6,6,4,4,4,10,5,5,6: 50 Second rou d .. .. 4,4,7,4,4,6,7,7,5 : 48 Third round .. .. 6,6,5,4,5,6,5,2,6 : 45 Fourth round .. .. 7, 4, 4, 5, 3, 7, 6, 4, 5 : 46

Mr. Laseron, who is an old St. Andrew player, and was some years ago scratch player of the Bangalore Club, was second. His first round was spoiled by a 10 at the first hole, but after that his play was very consistent. Mr. Walker, who hails from a little club at Epsom (England), made a hard fight for second place. Alter taking 57 for the first round he returned three rounds of 52 each. The captain of the club was not in his best form, and it was expected that he would have taken a better place than fourth. Mr. O Rorke played a fine round of 49 for his first, but his play was somewhat erratic, and the sixth hole brought him to grief. For this hole he played 41 strokes, viz., 7,12,14, and 8. Had he played this hole in good style he would probably have taken second place. Mr. Colbeck played an" unfortunate first round of 64 owing to a 12 at the seventh hole, but afterwards returned good rounds ot 48, 52, and 54. In the last two rounds he was handicapped by the lead of his driver becoming loose. Mr. H .D. Heather, who was expected to have a good chance of winning, commenced very badly, and could not afterwards recover his form. The following record hole 3 were returned : —Mr. O'Rorke, 3 for the first hole; Mr. Laseron, 2 for the fifth; Mr. Gillies, 2 for the eighth. The following are the scores :— First Second Third Fourth

WEST END ROWING CLUB. The committee of the West End Rowing Club 1 held a meeting in the boathouse, Ponsonby, on Saturday, Mr. S. D. Hanna (captain of the club) presiding. It was decided to hold a smoke concert in about three weeks time as a wind-up of the season. The meeting resolved to order from Messrs. Logan Bros, two new stump outriggers, to be ready for next season. The boats are to be of cedar and clinker built. The circular from the New Zealand Rowing Association regarding the proposal for inaugurating eight-oar rowing, was considered, and the committee decided to reply that at present they could not see their way to assist in the proposal.
