AMATEUR ATHLETIC SPORTS AT CAMBRIDGE.

Cambridge, Friday. The Cambridge West Amateur Athletic Club held their first grand carnival and sports to-day, at Cambridge West, in a paddock lent by Mr. W. Tucker for the occasion. The weather was all that could be desired, and about 400 people attended, including good a sprinkling of ladies, the gate money amounting to £12 6s 6d. There was a fair number of competitors in all events except the post entry, and the running was good. The Cambridge brass band was on the ground and gave several selections which went to enliven the proceedings, and altogether the sports were a great success. The following officers represented the Club :—President, Mr. F. W. Lang, M.H.R. ; vice-presidents, Messrs. R. Fisher and T. W. Hicks : judges, Messrs. B. Garland and C. Bowden ; starter, Mr. H. A. McKinnon ; '■ handicappers, Mr. H. A. McKinnon and others stewards, Messrs. W. Wallace, J. S. Fisher, R. Fisher, jun., B. Garland, A. Shaw, D. Bruce, J. B. Harker, and D. Anderson ; hon. treasurer, Mr. T. A. Hicks; hon. secretary, Mr. Geo. C. Northey. The following are the results :— 120 yds Maiden Handicap. First prize, trophy ; second, trophy : U. D. Armer, 1 : C. C. F. Rutherford, 2. Thirteen entered in this race, and it had to be run in two heats. Hill took first place in first heat, with Armer second; Rutherford coming in first in the second heat, with J. Russell second. The final heat resulted in a very close race, almost a dead heat. Juvenile Race, 200 yds, handicap. First prize, trophy ; second, trophy : R. Bell, 1; G. Bridgman, 2. There were 12 entries for this race, run in two heats. G. Bridgman, 1 ; C. Taylor, 2in first heat; with R. Bell, 1 ; and F. Taylor, 2in second heat. In the final heat R. Bell won by about 4yds. 75yds Handicap. First prize, silver medal; second trophy : Bridgman, 1 ; M. Anderson, 2. Run in two heats; 16 entries. Very close race. Time, lis. • The Three-legged Race fell through for want of entries. Halt-mile Handicap. First prize, silver medal; second, trophy :R. Corlett, 1 ; W. G. Macky, 2; W. Munro, 3. Five ran, the two scratch men taking first and second place. Time, 2m. 21 l-stb s. ■

Running Long Jump; post entry : Delaney, 1; Brunskill, 2. Delaney jumped about 19 feet, being scratch, Brunskill having 8 inches handicap. \ 440 yds Hurdles Handicap. First prize, gold medal; second, trophy: P. J. Delaney, lOvds, 1: W. T. Taylor, lOvds, 2; C. Rutherford, 10yds. 3. Six started, and a very close finish resulted. Time, lm. 7 l-srh a. Cambridge West Handicap, 220 yds. First prize, gold medal; second, silver medal: D. Bockett, scratch, 1; W. B. Teasdale, 12yds, 2. Six started. An easy win for Bockett. Time. 24 2 sth s. Ladies' Bracelet, 220 yds. First prize, gold medal second, silver bracelet: J. W. Bridge man, HJyds, 1; E. Walker, 4yds, 2; C. Griffiths, 15yds, 3. Twelve started. Run in two heats. D. Armer . taking first place in first heat, with M. Anderson second ; and E. Walker first in second heat, with C. Griffiths second. Time, 23 2-sth sin final heat. There were only two entries for three and a-half handicap bicycle race, H. Mitchell scratch, and C. Nixon with 500 yards. Nixon did not ride, and Mitchell claimed a walk over. Mitchell's bicycle tyre was punctured before the time for racing, he having to borrow a machine for riding. Stewards' Race, 150 yds. D. Brnce, 1; R. Fisher. 2; W. Wallace, 3. Three started. Close finish.

1000 yds Handicap. First prize, silver cup; second, trophy. H. Morse, 70yds, 1; W. G. Macky, 55yds, 2. Five started in this race. Griffiths fell out in' the first lap ; the scratch man taking second place half way round in first lap, falling out iff" second lap, leaving an exciting race between Macky and Morse, the latter proving a dark horse. Time, 2m 2Ss. One Mile Walk. First prize, trophy; second, trophy. A. Kingsford, 25yds, 1; S. C. B Macky, scratch, 2. Three entered. H. Stone dropping out in second lap, Kingsford leading by about 40 yards, the scratch man not being able to catch him. Time, Bm. 23is. One and a-half Mile Steeplechase Handicap. Ist prize, trophy : 2nd, trophy.—J. Cruickshank, 100 yds, 1; &- Morse, 150 yds, 2. Three entered tor this. Bockett dropped out in the second lap, leaving the race to Morse and Cruickshank, the former leading by about 60 yards until three-parts round in last lap, when he went off the course and missed last jump, Cruickshank coming up and overtaking him as he was going back to jump the hurdle, resulting as above.
