THE ENGLISH LABOUR MOVEMENT.
ADDRESS BY THE HOME
SECRETARY.
THE HON. A. J. BALFOUR AT
MANCHESTER.
Press Association.—Electric Telegraph.—
London, January 17. The Hon. H. H. Asquith, Home Secretary, addressing Trades Unionists, emphatically dissented from the Socialist motion carried at the Norwich Congress, and denied that its terms represented the opinion of the majority of workers. The proposal, he declared, was outside of reasonable discussion.
Speaking at Manchester, the Hon. A. J. Balfour said the Unionists favoured Social legislation, though they would never encourage the creation of an impossible Utopia.
