BOARD OF EDUCATION.

At a meeting of the Board of Educatson held yesterday there were present Messrs. Udy (in the chair), Canon Bates, and Messrs. Muir, Woodward, and Wilding. Appointments. — The following appointments were made :—Mr. H. Blackmun (second assistant, I'arnell), to take charge of Otorohanga school; Mr. A. W. B. Davis (Pongonby), to Whangapiro Valley; Mr. A.J. T. Judkins, to Matahura; and Mr, W. Brown, to Mangahura. General.—lt was decided that the work of tarring and sanding be done in the same way as last year under the inspection of the Board's architect. The question of painting the Nelson and Napier-streets schools was referred to the architects. The consideration of the enlargement of the Ponsonby school was deferred until there was a full meeting of the Board. It was agreed to add two rooms to the teacher's residence at Maketu. TheAratapu school—ibwas agreed to remove to a site 200 feet from that on which it is at present, the new spot being indicated by the committee. It was further decided to have the Alexandra school repaired, instead of building a new structure. East Tamaki.—Mr. Ellingham, whose tender for teacher's house at East Tamaki had been accepted, wrote stating that he had made a mistake in it. He asked that the contract should be cancelled and the deposit money returned.- It was agreed that the deposit must be forfeited, and that fresh tenders be called for. Tenders.—Mr. Samuel White's tender of £39, for improvements to the school grounds at Remuera, was accepted. There were five other tenders. The tender of Messrs, Grayson Brothers (£IBB 15s) was accepted for. an addition to Wiiangarata School. Seven tenders in all were received. Laxity.—The secretary drew attention to the laxity with which the monthly certificates had been made out. In many instances information asked for with reference to the holidays had not been given. In consequence, where new teachers had been appointed during the holidays, there was nothing to show on what date the school would be re-opened. It was agreed to defer the question until a future meeting to see if any improvement took place.
