THE TRIBAL DISPUTE AT PAEROA.
[a? TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Thames, Friday. Quite a large gathering of Maoris have assembled at the rununga house, at Parawai, during the last day or two, the object of the meeting being partly on account of the death of a native chief named Hohepa Toa, at Kirikivi, who was buried this morning, and partly because of the tribal dispute over the ownership of a gravel-pit at raeroa, about a fortnight ago, between the NgatikoiandNgatitawhaki tribes. The party was further augmented today by the arrival of about 60 armed natives from Manaia, and others are expected from Kuaotunu and Coromandel in a day or two. This afternoon the natives gave a "haka" at Parawai, which was witnessed by a large assembly of Europeans, whilst to-morrow they propose discussing the quarry dispute and deciding what course of action shall be taken with reference to the matter. So far, ib la intended that the whole party shall leave here early on Monday morning next for Paeroa, where they will meet the contestant parties, in conjunction with other tribes from Waikato and surrounding districts. I understand that Mr. H. Eyre Kenny, R.M., and a detachment of police will accompany the natives from here.
