SAMOAN ANNEXATION.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—lt is a reliet to see in to-day's Herald that; the mad scheme of annexing Samoa by New Zealand is not going on quite smoothly. It appears that the three Treaty Powers are unable to keep these savages in order and prevent them killing each other, so, lo and behold, New Zealand offers to undertake the task, having had 30 mnch experience and having found so little difficulty in bringing native troubles to an end. Verily we shall have the fable of the Trog and the ox exemplified here before long, only that the Tarawera eruption will be nothing to it. I see by an extract from the Melbourne Ar|sus that in America the thinkers do not object to the "wild cat" States putting into practice their wild and visionary theories, and so doubt we shall have sympathisers who will rejoice in our "wild-cat experiment." I wonder that the New Zealand Government waits for the acquiescence of the Home Government, and that whey do not take the "bull by the horns," and turn out the Powers in possession, and order immediate peace. If the Hinemoa with her brass four-pounder cannot be spared, one of the Devonport ferry boats might be chartered, and no doubt the sight of the New Zealand national flag would put all. the chaos to flight.
