CITY SCHOOLS COMMITTEE.

The regular meeting of the City Schools Committee (and the last previous to the annual election) was held last evening, <vt the Wellesleystreet School. Present : Mr. J. Blades (chairman), Messrs. Farrell, Julian, Fairs, Crowe, Burns, Adams, and Dr. Walker. Annual Report.—The report to be submitted to the meeting of householders was read by the Chairman. It was adopted, and a vote of thanks was accorded to the chairman, for the able report which he had prepared. The following is a summary of the | report:—The committee held 22 meetings. There are five schools staffed as follows :— Head teachers, 5; assistant teachers, 26 pupil teachers, 27 : total, 58. The roll number of pupils for the year ending March 31st was 2999, and the average attendance 2614, as against3o3B and 2528 respectively for the previous twelve months. The report proceeds to deal witn scholarships and certificates of proficiency, inspector's reports on standard examinations, etc. The report deals at length with the whole system of education as it operates in Auckland and concludes as follows :—" The committee have to recognise the efforts of the staffs of your respective schools to keep up with the standard of other work, though at a disadvantage. The school buildings are in very fair order, but some of the buildings may require painting during the ensuing year. The statement of accounts showed the committee's receipts to have been £813 9s 5d ; expenditure, £718 5s lOd ; leaving a balance of £95 3s on the 31st of March last. Waste op Water.—The chairman called attention to the great consumption of water in Wellesley-street school, and it was agreed to send a letter to the cleaner calling his attention to the matter. Balance.— The chairman said the Board of Education had paid into :he committee's account £136 5s on school account. As to the stationery account there was a credit of £55 19s 3d, and there was a credit from school accounts.
