Ik the case of Grimm and Co., of Hamburg, v, John Manttan, of Wellington, a claim for £55 12s, with respect to the consignment of Austrian chairs seized by the Customs, Mr. Justice Richmond said the invoice was not fraudulent, but it was clearly artificial. Section 51 of the Customs Act did not fit the present case. Judgment would be for the amount of the bill with costs, execution to bo stayed for fourteen days, so that a counter claim might bo tried when the question of the costs of the counter claim would be dealt with. Ministers are revising the list of Justices of the Peace, a number of additions being made. During the passage of the s.s. Te Koa from Lyttelton, a passenger named Simpson, who comes from Dunedin, fell down the hold, injuring his back so severely that he had to be removed to the Hospital. CHRisTCHtiRCH, Tuesday. William Du Maulin, a very early settler in the Northern District, died bo-day. He arrived in Sydney in 1828, and came to Canterbury in 1853. At Rangiora, to-day, a farmer named Thomas Barlton was committed for trial on a charge of larceny from a farmer residing near him. Dcnedin, Tuesday. At a meeting of hairdressers a resolution was passed approving of the Bill for the compulsory closing of retail shops on some one half day in the week, and declaring Thursday the only suitable day for hairdressers. Hiram Baron, alias Bernstone, who was arrested at Lyttelton on a charge of obtaining £40 by false pretences from T. M. Carroll, has been remanded for a week.
