THE FATAL ACCIDENT ON THE WAIRARAPA.
The Melbourne Argus of February 23 contains the following:—The passage of the Union Company's steamer Wairarapa from New Zealand was marked by an accident that resulted in the loss at sea of Thomas Wellstead, A.8., aged 28, and a native of England. While employed in cleaning ship at four o'clock last Saturday afternoon Weillstead lost his foothold on the rail, and fell overboard with a despairing cry for help. Life-buoys were immediately thrown by several passengers on deck, the engines were promptly stopped by Captain Mcintosh and started full speed astern, and 3, lifeboat was manned and lowered in a very brief space of time. Both the steamer and the lifeboat cruised about for nearly two hours in search of the missing seaman, without, however, finding the slightest trace of him. It is surmised that he was struck by the revolving propeller, and that he sank out of sight almost immediately. The deceased was married last Christmas Day, and when off duty resided in Auckland.
