CHESS CONGRESS AT DUNEDIN
[fiy TELEGRAPH. PRESS ASSOCIATION.] • DoNEDIN, Thursday. In the Chess Congress Brown and Barnes have now six wins and three losses, with only one game to play. Iceland's score is five wins and three losses ; Edwards and Hookham, 5$ wins to 1$ losses, with two games each to play. , Hookham adopted the Ruy Lopez opening against Cleland, who replied with the Berlin defence. The 25th move was weak, and three moves later Cleland sacrificed a piece for a pawn, and had to resign on the 51th move. Brown opened with theGuioco piano against Smith, who conducted the defence with great care. Taking advantage of the play Smith was able to announce one of the prettiest matches played in the present Congress. Pleasants opened with the Ruy Lopez against Mellor, but gradually lost the position. Mellor won a pawn, and gained the exchange, and alterwards a queen for two rooks. Pleasants resigned on the 54th move. Mouatt adopted Philidor's defence against Barnes, who had a strong attack at the 18th move, and won the exchange. Mouatt resigned shortly afterwards. Lelivre won from Barton, after a lively and interesting game.
