DR. LEMON'S SUCCESSOR.
[BY TELEGRAPH. — PKESS ASSOCIATION.] Dr/NEUIN, Thursday. At the Telegraph Office to-night, Air J. K. Logan, who has been appointed to succeed Dr. Lemon, was presented with a quantity of valuable plate subscribed for by the officers of the Telegraph and Postal Department of Otago and Southland. The presentation was made by the Hon. J. G. Ward, who had just arrived by train. On doing so he referred to Mr Logan's past services, and said he regretted the selection had been adversely criticised. Mo said that in no respect was it correct to say the appointment was the result of political pressure. Mr Logan had been selected entirely upon his merits, and because ho (Mr Ward) personally believed he was entitled to the position. He said that he did not wish for one moment by inuendo or otherwise to reflect on another gentleman, who felt he was entitled to the position -a gentleman who possessed very high qualificationr. It was out of no disrespect to him that he said Mr. Logan was entitled to the position. Many things had to be taken into consideration in making the selection, and he said no one in the service but Mr. Logan was entitled 60 the position.
