Per Pukaki, from Newcastle: 2000 tons coal. . v , > At a quarter to six o'clock last evening the Union S.S. Company's steamer Waihora, Captain John Anderson, arrived from Sydney. Mr. H. C. Seigel, the purser, to whom we are indebted for our files, reports that the steamer left Sydney at 2.15 p.m. on December 30, and cleared the Heads the same day at 2.55 p.m. Passed the Three Kings on the 3rd instant at 7 p.m. ; was abreast of the North Cape at 12 p.m. on the 4th, and arrived in port as above. Experienced light variable winds throughout the passage to Cape Brett, thence light south-west wind to Kawau Island, thence light southerly to arrival. The Waihora leaves for Southern ports, Hobart, and Melbourne this afternoon The Union S.S. Company's steamer Pukaki, Captain C. Fleming, arrived in harbour at 6.30 last evening from Newcastle.with a cargo of coal. Owing to there being no berth vacant at the Hobson-street Wharf the Pukaki had to anchor in the stream until this morning. Of the passage Mr. Livingstone, the chief officer, reports.— s,s. Pukaki left Newcastle on December 29 at 7.15 p.m., and at 7.55 p.m. cleared the Nobbys. Sighted the Three Kings at noon on the 3rd instant ; passed the North Cape at 8.35 p.m. the same day. At 5.55 a., m. yesterday Cape Brett was abeam; Rangitoto Beacon at 5.20 p.m., arriving as above. She left for Kuaotunu, Mercury Bay, and; Tairua last evening, and returns to-morrow night. • ; ■ - The ship Waitangi sailed for Napier yesterday morning. Yesterday morning the barquentine Nora Wiggins sailed for New York. The Northern S.S. Company's steamer Chelmsford leaves for Tauranga and Whakatane this evening. . Yesterday the Amerioan barque Obed Baxter commenced taking in cargo for New York, several hundred cases and bags of kauri gum being shipped. < The cargo of the barquentine Cuthona from the Islands is to be transhipped into the Morven and Forfarshire for London. On the Ist Lost, at 4.50 a.m., the mail steamer Alameda passed the mail steamer Monowai bound from this port to San Francisco. H.M. ships Orlando, Ringarooma, Tauranga, and Katoomba left Sydney for Hobart on December 29. H.M.B. Paluma left Thursday Island for Brisbane on December 22. THE ALAMEDA. Somewhat unexpectedly, the mail steamer Alameda, Captain-H. G. Morse, arrived in harbour yesterday morning, from San Francisco, Honolulu, and Apia, with the English and American mails. The steamer left San Francisco one day after contract date, but has made the lost time up fully on the passage, which was accomplished in the good time of 18 days 21 hours 41 minutes. Throughout the voyage, fine weather prevailed, and enabled the passengers to indulge in various games, &c, to while away the time. Mr. J. B. Sutton, the purser, to whom we are indebted for our files and despatches, reporfos that the Alameda left San Francisco on December 15, discharging the pilot at 4.30 Dm. After a pleasant run, Honolulu was reached at 6 a.m. on the 22nd, and after a stay of 12 hours, the voyage was resumed, and the harbour of Apia made at noon on the 29th, After discharging cargo and taking on board a consignment of fruit, the Alameda left at 4.30 p.m. the same day, and stopped tor Pilot Sainty at 9.30 a.m. yesterday, the steamer berthing at the Queen-street Wharf about an hour later. From San Franoisco to Honolulu, fresh S.W. winds were experienced ; thence, moderate winds and fine weather to arrival. The Alameda left for Sydney shortly after 6 o'clock last evening. ISLAND SHIPPING. When the mail steamer Alameda left H.M.s. Champion was in port at Honolulu, as also were the United States warships Philadelphia, Adams, and Corwin, and the Japanese warship Waniwa, which had just arrived from Togo, Japan. On December 13 the German barque Statsmeinster Selmer arrived as Apia from East London, to load copra for Europe. The French barquentine Fanelly arrived at Apia from Noumea on December 18, to load copra for Europe. On December 18 the American schooner Ida Schnauer sailed from Apia for San Franciooo. THE MIOWERA. The temporary repairs to the Canadian mail steamer Miowera at Honolulu, were so far advanced when the Alameda left for this port, that it was expected she would-be able to proceed to San Francisco about December 25. A new temporary stern frame has been fitted by the Honolulu Ironworks, and the steamer was to go on a trial trip to test that portion of the work and the engines, before proceeding on the trip to San Francisco. Within the next few days intimation should be received by cable of her arrival at San Francisco. AMERICAN SHIPPING. . In their circular of December 9, Messrs. R. W. Forbes and Son report : — Freights : There is a weaker feeling, but rates do not materially ohange. Continental ports are taking little, and there have been reductions to some of these, but for the United Kingdom there is little change, save an advance in Liverpool freights, due to a temporary scarcity of room. Charters for the colonies have included the Lucille, 1329 tons register, for Melbourne (January despatch): Ephialtes, 669 tons, and Agostino Rombo, SO7 tons, for Brisbane (prompt) ; Southern Cross, 1087 tons, for Sydney. We also report the S. A. Thompson, 652 tons, for New Zealand (probably Dunedin and Lyttelton), and Broomhall, 1338 tons, January, loading for Sydney and Melbourne. Freight for all ports is scarce, but no change in berth rates has occurred. We quote: Melbourne, 15 cents Sydney, 14 cents; Brisbane, 18 cents to 19 cents; Adelaide, 16 cents; Wellington and Lyttelton, 22 cents; Dunedin, 2l cents; Auckland, 24 cents. The Elwy, for Brisbane, is full, and vessel has sailed, but cargo list will not be available for present mail. She carries 15,500 cases kerosene and 300 barrels rosin." The American barque H. J. Libbey sailed from New York for Lyttelton and Wellington, on November 15. The American barque Lottie Moore was to sail from New York for Wellington and Auckland about December 12. The American barque Sadie A. Thompson was loading at New York for Dunedin, Lyttelton, and Auckland when the mail left, and was expected to sail about the Ist inst.
