COMMERCIAL.

Nkw Zealand Herald Office. Thursday evening. The strong attack on consumptives, both ' solid and liquid, during the holidays, has j made many shelves in retail establishments . partially empty, and on the new year resumption of active business the flow of sorting up orders both in town and country, has . been good, but beyond this general remark we see little room for report. Wholesalers . have not fairly settled down to their ordinary / work, and what commercial activity exists is entirely of the perfunctory order. i The American trade advices report a sudden and unexpected advance in kerosene. It is too early to test the result of the advice locally as prices are often dictated by a wish to stop accumulating bond rents. Rosin is on the upward grade, and in rei gard to the general condition of American i trade, while there is a restoration of financial i confidence, everything is dull and languid, > with the position much influenced by the • uncertainty as to the result of tariff revision i in Congress. • The press report of the partial ruination 5 of the New South Wales maize crop, ought, ) under all ordinary calculation with competitive steam freights to Sydney, to result in a I move up in this cereal, but there is not much i shipping quality in the market, and operators are shy of giving indications of their figuring out the spot value of what is not obtainable. We have known buyers asked to cable for best c.i.f. quotations, and to make reply . practically " cui bono?" The press advice '. tomorrow morning will make every buyer ot , a twopenny newspaper know %s much as I 5 do after a cost of a seven shilling cable and . reply. This while telling strongly of the , enterprise and alertness of the colonial news- ', paper, is undoubtedly destructive ot much , individual effort, and is another justification with many of the correctness of calling the ' Press the fourth estate. '. We doubt our ability to get at the true • position of the maize market which is all at sixes and sevens," with sales at 2s 6d and 2s 7d for fair, but not good shipping quality, with other holders stiff at 2s , 9d under a belief that the chances are ; for a smart rise. This all depends upon , whether the cable reports refer as a whole to . the New South Wales maize districts, or ) only the Hunter river portion. So far there [ is no buying disposition cabled, and as the . Sussex -street crowd are smart in quest of a ' good thing the inference is that East Coast - jubilation must be restrained until there is a . more decided position. It is none the less clear that there is a probable move up. Oats are without the slightest alteration. Potatoes: The take of the Fiji boats always lends a little stiffness to rates, as buyers cannot defer, and sellers know, but , Friday's auctions are likely to show coni siderable weakness. For the present we quote £4 to £4 10s. The general quality this , season is remarkably Rood. Milling wheat: The markets are quite of a ' holiday character. The young wheat still ' promises well. Crushed wheat : The demand is steadily improving. Fowl wheat, free from weevils, commands full prices. Bran and sharps : The cheap opposition . freight has had the effect of fetching heavy arrivals of old accumulated millers and ' merchants' stocks from the South and mean- [ time has somewhat checked the sale of freshmade local. In the local produce market, the prices ' remain unchanged. Beat dairy fresh butter ' is 6d; second quality, 5d ; and third quality, ' 4d per lb, wholesale. Eggs are 8d per dozen wholesale, and lOd per dozen retail. KAURI GUM MARKET. ' The following is the report of the gum market and ruling quotations, as furnished ' to us by the committee of gum merchants :— Poor ordinary £27 to £28 . Ordinary £37 to £38 Good ordinary ... ... £40 to £42 . East Coast £57 to £58 r Parcels of superior ordinary command - higher prices according to quality and de- . gree of cleaning. Supplies from the 28th . December to date, 80 tons. Owing to the 3 holidays little or no business has been done, . and the market remains about the same. LONDON. » Press Association.—Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. » London, January 3. ' The total quantity of wheat and flour afloat for the United Kindom is 2,928,000 quarters, • and for the Continent 1,000,000 quarters. The American visible wheat supply is esti- ■ mated at 915,000.000 bushels. ' South Australian butter is quoted at 84s ' to 100s, while the fancy article is bringing 106s; Victorian ditto, beßt quality 102s to | lOfe, fancy 110s. : Union Steamship Company's shares are ' quoted at £8 ss. \ Per New Zealand Land Association, Limited. London, January 2. : Wheat.—The market is depressed. Spot . ' quotations have declined 6d per 4961b since : I last report. Other quotations am unchanged 1 ! since last telegram.
