Mellor offered Evans Gambit to Barnes, who accepted at sth move. Barnes adopted the RB 4 defence. Mellor sacrificed several pawns to keep up the attack, and at the 13th move had lost a bishop and three pawns for his opponent's king's rook. A very interesting game followed to the 28th move, when Mellor made a miscalculation, and resigned on the 30th move. Edwards adopted the Sicilian defence against Cleland. In endeavouring to force matters he lost a second piece, out made ■uch a stubborn defence that over 70 moves were made before he was mated. Hookam opened with the Ruy Lopez against Brown. At the 26th move he lost bis queen for a rookandapawn.andafterahard'fougbfcgamo resigned on the 90th move. Barton played the Sicilian defence to Smith's move, ; A very even game resulted to the 29th move, when Barton gained a pawn, and pursuing the advantage, queened a pawn on the 40th move. Smith resigned a few moves later on. Mowatt had a bye. Brown is leading with 5} wins to 1£ losses, bub he has still to take a bye. Hookam and Oleland are second, with \\ to J each.
