For some time pasb there has been a continual drain of sheep from Kawakawa to the Islands, and tho local butchers are now compelled to iraporb their carcase mutton from Auckland. The town of Hastings, in Hawke s Bay presents a pleasing picture of prosperity at the present time. In all directions may be seen cottages and buildings of all kinds in various stages of completion. A nice point cropped up at the Police Court yesterday. Dr. Giles decided to take time to consider whether a rat could be termed an animal ordinarily kept in confinement or used for domestic purpose?. At Waiuku, on Friday, the ISth inst., Mr. William Hall, of Brookfiold, Waiuku East, and Captain Manning, Waiuku Cavalry Volunteers, were sworn in as Justices of tho Peace for New Zealand by Captain Jackson, R.M. The Manawatu Standard says : —"Some of the passengers by the Napier train recently had a narrow escape from serious accident. P. to sign their application forms."
