COMMERCIAL.

New Zealand Herald Office. Thursday evening. DORINn (the past week business on the Stock Exchange has been very unsettled, and will probably remain so, until it it known what action the Loan Company will take as regards reconstruction. Bank of New Zealand have been sold at £4 us lid, but there is little business doing in them. Colonials have changed hands at :S3s Gil : buyers are now offering 335, with sellers at 355. Nationals are offered at 235, Insurance: Parcels of New /'■aland Insurance have been sold as low as 60s : they are now firm, buyers at tils. South British are being offered at 33s ; Nationals at ISs, and Standard at 17s 3d. Auckland gas, old issue, have been sold at £10 15s, and new at £5 5s ; buyers are offering £"> (is for new, with sellers at A.T> 7s lid. Accident Insurance have been sold at !)s lid ; sellers at 10s. In mining, Albumins are slightly better : Buyers 3s ; sellers 3s 3d. There was a demand for St. Hippo's at the beginning of the week, and sales were effected up to Is '2d ; they are now easier. May Queens have been sold up to 4-s od ; they can now be obtained at Is 4d. Saxons have also been in demand, and numerous sales made up to Is (id, at which price there are still sellers, with buyers at Is 4d. Haz.'lhanks have had a small advance, sales at 2s 9d ; buyers at this figure, with sellers at 3s. Waihis have been sold at ISs (id; buyers are offering 17s b\l, sellers are asking 10s. Crowns arc considerably easier and may bo obtained at '20s. The Try Fluke Company have declared a (id dividend, and sales have been effected at 2s 3d.

The necessity to find money determines a multiplicity of values, and the necessity has been more pronounced this week than has been felt for a long while. It is needless to refer to some of the causes as these are widely known. Suffice it to say that they have transmitted some sort of nervousness through all branches of business, and a studied anxiety to escape any sort of liability is prejudicing the state of general trade considerably. In addition to this we have a variety of disturbing causes, such as the election, the direct veto matter, and the extraordinary continuation of wet weather. Many philosophical traders smoke the calumet of content and let matters right themselves, as effort little avails. Others unfortunately cannot aH'ort to be philosophical, and regard the position with mixed and somewhat doleful ideas about the change for the better that everybody hopes for. It is remarked that nearly every staple industry in the colony is sharing more or less in a general state of prosperity, and withal this traders are not prospering in anything like the same ratio, owing to the mania for cutting that exists in so many quarters. This apparently chronic evil may be cured by the financial stringency arising from recent events.

The import market shows no buoyancy, and although the large collection of duties dining the week denotes good trade, we fear that sales have borne a small proportion to Customs clearances Values have not apparently altered, but we learn that cable advice has been received from Calcutta of a very firm and advancing market for all ranges of Indian teas.

Whiting has been in good request from manufacturers of arated waters, preparing stock for the summer trade.

Currants continue in strong request, and greater difficulty is found in securing prime quality fruit. Candles are receiving good trade attention. The demand for household purposes is larger. Mining candles are, however, dull. The produce trade has been fairly active, but the downpour has affected this suction as well as all others.

Maize is extremely scarce. A parcel lias been quitted at 3s Id oil" wharf. The priceex store is 3s .'ld, with strong demand. East Coast holders cannot cart to shipping ports this weather.

Oats are unaltered from last week

Potatoes excite considerable attention. A large quantity has arrived during the week, and several lots have been sold at a live shillings per ton concession, to secure immediate sale. To-day telegraphic advice from the South, lias stiffened the market again, as a belief exists that Sydney will be a large buyer at advanced rates. \\'e quote sales at £5 los, with principal holders asking t'ti, firm.

Medium size mild ripe cheese is in strong enquiry. Milling wheat : The firmness noted last week in the English market has not been maintained. Our own and Southern markets are also quiet, partly owing to the recent advance in oats. A large number of draught horses are now getting 2011) of crushed wheat mixed with their chatf in place of double that quantity of oats. Several knowing farmers and horse breeders aver that the horses relish it better than the oats, besides being more nutritious and economical. Seed wheat : Owing to the rain, farmers cannot get the ground ready for sowing. Fowl wheat is in excellent demand. The badness of the roads prevents maize, coming forward here at present, so that helps the sale of fowl wheat greatly. Bran ami sharps are not in much demand. Flour: Extra heavy deliveries of the flour sold several weeks back are now taking place. In the local produce market prices at present remain unchanged. Eggs, however, are very plentiful, and as the demand is rather limited, a reduction in price may be looked for. Prices are as follow:—Best dairy fresh butter is 10 1; second quality, 7d ; and third quality, tid per lb wholesale. Eggs are lOd per dozen wholesale, and Is per dozen retail.

Mr. Thornes reports the sale of a building allotment, being lot '.i') of allotment 5, with a frontage to Auburn-street, Kvber Pass, of 33 feet, to Mr. Walter Hugh}'!, on behalf of Mr. Green, of Wellington, for £37 10s cash ; also, trie sale of lot 12 of a subdivision of allotment lb", with frontage to College Hill of 40 feet, and house of six rooms erected thereon, on behalf of Mrs. Kane, to Mr. J. F. W. Cook. for £330 cash.

Mr. C. Williamson, land agent, reports tho sale of Mr. Bells 111 acres at Papakura, to Mr. Newman, at £'_' per acre.
