THE REES-CADMAN EPISODE.
TO Til K EDITOR. Sir, —Your correspondent; "P. Dunlop," says that " both gentlemen demur to the finding of the jury, and refer the matter to the electors of Auckland." Such is not the case. Mr. Roes was perfectly .satisfied with the verdict of the jury, and distinctly said so in his place in the House. Again, Mr. Dunlop goes on to say that " both gentlemen have apparently had a finger in the same pie," meaning, I presume, the native land "pie;" and Mr. Dunlop further says that " both of these eminent and honourable members have allowed themselves to be tarred by the same native laud trafficking brush." These charges have been brought against Mr. Rees over and over again, and have never been proved. _ On the contrary, Mr. Rees has satisfied every man who has the honesty to admit that he has been mistaken, that ho never did traffic in native land, that lie never held, or never sold, or bought a single acre of native land oil his own behalf. He has many a time and oft bought and sold lands for the natives, and held lands in trust for various people, but he did so in the capacity of a trustee, and fae challenged any one to prove that he ever abused his trust. Thosewhodoubt his veracity will now have an opportunity of proving if they can the truth of their accusations or getting an explanation from Mr. Rees. To nut Mr. Rees and Mr. Cadinan in the same boat with regard to " trafficking " in native hind is not only unfair, but absurd, until his accusers have formulated a case against him. Te rest contented with vague generalities is unworthy of those who are supposed to bo intelligent electors. —I am, etc., A.T.R.
