He refers to recent scenes at the Police Court, when numbers of women were fined for keeping houses of ill-fame. He thinks that in many cases the public schools are responsible for much of the social evil, and that there should be separate schools for boys and girls._ The schools teach neither religion nor morality. Mr. Hawes urges that; instead of sending missions to the heathen, we ought to endeavour to reclaim girls who are on the verge of a life of vice. "Country Gosling'' refers to the lata murder in Sydney by a gang of larrikins, and says that some of our public leaders are pandering to a dangerous spirit. The Premier attacks the Railway Commissioner* in order to get votes : the Gumdiggers' Coinmission is to please a class. He thinks it a pity that Mr. Withy should sacrifice Ilia political prospects for a theory that can never become a reality, and give encouragement to a needy class of political adventurers and social agitators.
