FATAL ACCIDENT AT THE GREAT BARRIER.
A fatal accidonfc occurrod at tho Great Barrier Island on Monday, when a settler named W. Cooper was killed. He and another settler, Warren, were standing on a low scaffolding, crosscutting a log, but when the log broke off, the remaining part of the tree fell also, and crushed the timber on which they were standing. Both workmen were precipitated to tho ground. Warren escaped unhurt, bub Cooper fell on his neck against a tree, and was instantly killed. The deceased was greatly liked by all in the district, and his untimely end has caused general regret. He leaves a widow and three childron, for whom much sympathy is felt. At an inquest on Tuesday, before Mr. Palmer, coroner, and a jury of seven, of whom Mr. E. Paddieon was chosen foreman, a verdict of accidental death was returned.
