The Registrar of the University Senate yesterday received from England the results of the examinations, and so far as the papers have yet been looked at thoro appears to bo no important discrepancies with the information received by cable in February and forwarded to candidates. A special meeting of the Senate will be held on Wednesday, the *2Cth inst., to consider the examiners' report. At a meeting of the Wellington District Law Society, Mr. W. S. Reid, SolicitorGeneral, was elected president, and Mr. W. B. Edwards vice-president. It is not correct that Mr. R. A. Loughnan is about to become editor of the Catholic Times, in succession to Mr. Evison, who has joined the staff of the Christchurch Press Company. Mr. Loughnan retains his position as editor of the New Zealand Times. The Customs have seized 123 dozen silk handkerchiefs and 20 pieces silk consigned to a Chinese dealer, and which are alleged to be undervalued in the invoice. The Department secured the goods at invoice price, with 10 per cent, added. The Rev. Dr. Watters, Rector of St. Patrick's College, has been summoned home on ecclesiastical business, and expects to leave here, via Sydney, early next) month. He will be absent about six months. The Minister of Lands will address his constituents towards the end of the month, Napier, Tuesday. To-day Hon. J. D. Ormond was again elected chairman of the Education Board, a position which he has hold since tho passing of the Act. HaweßA, Tuesday. lb Is reported hero that the Government have lodged an appeal against tho decision of the Land Board in tho HendyPease case. Mr. McGuiro addressed his constituents at Stratford last evening, and received a vote of thanks and confidence. The only thing new in his speech was that he expressed doubt as to the advancement of the co-operative system, and condemned the Government for refusing to adopt a scheme ho had lately promoted for dealing with the Taranaki difficulty. WKsTrouT, Tuesday. The proprietor and editor of the Charleston Herald, Mr. P. Kitson, died to-day of paralysis, after a short illnoss. Ho leaves a widow and five children. Oamaro, Tuesday. John Doyle, farm labourer, single, was V,illed this morning in the main street of file town. He and another man wore driving in a buggy when tho horse bolted. Doyle attempted to jump out of tho trap and gob pitched on his head. He was picked up unconscious, and died in a few hours. CiißiSTcmmcit, Tuesday. A petition promoted by the Mayor, for the reconstruction of tho wards of the city, was considered at a special meeting of the City Council to-night, when tho councillors resolved to send a counter-petition to His Excellency the Governor. During the meeting a ruling given by the Mayor was not accepted by the members, and he thereupon left the room. Dr/NKM.v, Tuesday. At tho draughts match to-night threo games woro played. Tho scores are now equal, Foreman having won ono game, while the other two were drawn.
