THE WELLINGTON FIRE.
[BY TKUSO RAP H. —PRESS ASSOCIATION. 1 Wellington, Friday. At the inquest upon the.fire ab Smart's pawnbroker's shop, W. Smart, his brother, said he had left an albo-carbon light burning when he went out to post a letter, and the fire occurred during his absence. A similar burner had set fire to goods in the window some time before, and he was aware there was some risk in using these lights. G. M Smart, proprietor, who was away in Christohurch at the time, said he had had no opportunity of estimating his loss, as he had not been permitted to enter the building. He estimated the value of the stock at £5000. The total insurances were £3170. Constable Gantley, who first saw the fire, said on entering the place there was no flame near the gas jet referred to by the first witness. The captain of the Fire Brigade said the main body of the fire was away from the jet, but when he eaw it the latter bad been destroyed. Thos. Whisker, Smart's storeman, said the burner had overflowed a few days before, and another had been substituted. The jury returned an open verdict. j
