CRICKET.

PARNELL V. AUCKLAND. This contest was resumed and concluded on Saturday, resulting in a victory for Parnell by seven runs, the scores being 79 and 72 respectively. On the conclusion of the first innings the Parnell commenced their second innings, and were piling on the runs in fine style when the bell rung, the score being 102 for four wickets. On the resumption of the game, Wilson (29) and R. Neil took their places to the bowling of Lawson and W. Mills, and by careful play added 20 runs to the score of the preceding week, when Wilson played all over one from the junior bowler and retired bowled for a sturdily made 40, the board showing 4—4o— G4. J. Arneil filled the vacancy, and was clean bowled by Mills'next ball: 5-0—64. Webster followed, and after making a brace was badly run out by Neil : 6—2—71. Hutton was immediately bowled by Mills on arrival : —071. Banfield, Taylor, and Howe were bowled by Lawson without adding to the score. The innings closed for 72, R. Neil being not out with 19 to his credit, made by good sound cricket. The excitement was very great as the Auckland wickets fell so rapidly, but very few were prepared to see the Parnellites snatch a victory from their last season's conquerors, especially with the score at 64 on the fall of the fourth wicket. No doubt the loss of Webster's wicket was a severe one to the Aucklanders at that period, he being the only reliable batsman then left, as was shown "by the easy way in which Lawson bowled all the remaining batsmen. Too much praise cannot be given to Lawson for the persistent way lie stuck to his task. He bowled through the { innings with great judgment and fully deserved the applause bestowed on him by the spectators. W. Mills ably kept up the j family name as cricketers, and is to be congratulated on his performance with tlffe ball in this his first senior match, his average reaching 65 balls 16 runs 3 wickets. That of Lawson was '200 balls 25 runs 5 wickets. On Parnell going in for their second innings they compiled 10:2 for 4 wickets, Gardiner and I. Mills contributing 50 (not out) and 32 respectively. Mills pot his runs by a firstclass display of batting, although an appeal was given in his favour early in his innings. Subjoined are the scores:— Auckland.— Innings. T. United resumed their innings, the score being a tie, and last men at the wickets. McKinley hit the first ball for 2, putting United ahead, but after 3 more runs had been added McPherson returned 1 to Walton, and retired for a very well-played 30, the total being 58, or 5 a-head of Onslow. The latter then started their second innings, D. Hay and Miller bowling for United. Batting one man short, Onslow could only get 40, leaving United 42 to win. These were obtained for the loss of five wickets, United winning by 5 live wickets and 2 runs. D. Hay and Miller each secured four wickets in Onslow's second innings, Walton (12), being the only double figure scorer. In United's second innings McPherson again batted nicely for 11, and Miller got 13. Walton captured four out of the five wickets that were down. Lusk kept wicket very well for United, stumping two men in good style. Onslow. —Second Innings. Lundou, b D. Hay 0 W. Whelan, c Stemson, b Miller 3 Walton, run out ... 12 Robinson, st Lusk, b D. EDUCATIONAL CHAMBERS V. PITT-STREET MUTUAL. This game, standing at Pitt-street 27 and Educational Chambers 35 and 69 for eight wickets, was resumed on Saturday. Educational Chambers added only one run for the remaining two wickets, and Pitt-street made a second attempt to score. At the start fortune favoured them, as in the absence of other bowlers Baxter went on, but could not find a longstop. Consequently 10 extras (including six byes), increased the Pitt-street second innings from 16 runs off the bat to 26, leaving them, however, still in a minority of 49 —27 and 20 to 32 and 70. Appended is the second innings of Pitt - street: — Paul, b Briefly, 2 ; Craig, run out, 2 ; Robinson, c and b Baxter, 5 ; Andrews, sen., b Brierly, 5 ; Brooking, run out, 0 ; Firth, 1) Cowan, 3 ; Oxford, b Brierly, 0 ; Andrews, jun., b Brierly, 0; Cornish, c Murphy, b Brierly, 0 ; Moncur, c and b Cowan, 0 ; Winstone, not out, 0; extras, 10: total, 26.
