POLO AT AVONDALE.
The Auckland Polo Club opened the season on Saturday afternoon, on the Avondale Racecourse, where some excellent play was indulged in by a considerable number of players. The weather was all that could be desired, and the only drawback lay in the fact that the grass was rather long, which had the effect of making the play much slower than would otherwise have been the case. The members of the club were on the ground punctually at the appointed time, and it was found that there was a sufficient number to play two games, which, of course, brought four teams on to the field. This was cer«
tamly the largest muster of players that has ever been seen upon any polo ground in Auckland, though several of the new members failed to put in an appearance. The coming season gives every promise of being the most successful since polo has been started in Auckland. In the first game No. 1 team consisted of Captain Hunter Blair and Messrs. Whewell, Loch art, and Parchas, and No. 2 of Messrs; O'Rorke, Mackellar, Stewart, and Wansborough. The first spell lasted 15 minutes, and during this time O'Eorke's team scored one goal. The second spell was an interesting one, the final result being a victory for 0 Rorke's team by two goals. The second game was a very close one, the teams being Messrs. Gilmore, Heywood, Prince, and Buddie, versus Dr. Forbes and I Messrs. Ansenne, Noble, and Purchas In the first spell neither side scored, but in ttie secoud spell Dr. Forbes' team proved the stronger, and won by one goal, the only score made. The play was far . superior to that of last vear, the players showing a more scientific knowledge of the game. A great deal of enthusiasm was manifested by all present.
