THE SUMNER INQUIRY.

[BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Christchurch, Saturday, The inquiry into the management of tht Sumner Deaf and Dumb Institute was re sumed to-day. Dr. Prims, medical attendant to the Institute, deposed that the director and Mrs. Van Asch were verj careful of the children's health, that ther< were no grounds for complaint, and thai the skin disease which had prevailed to i certain extent among the children was not due 'to their food. Miss Buckingham, assistant in the institution, stated that the food was good, and the children not overworked. Mr. W. H. Tanner, M.H.R., stated that, without reflecting on the management of the institution, he thought something ought to be done in the direction of teaching pupils the rudiments of trades, so as to help to fit them for earning their own livelihood. He suggested that boys should visit workshops under the charge of a tutor, ami during the last two or three years should be placed singly or in twos or threes under competent instructors, G. Van Asch, director, re-called, stated that he had no register showing the dates of admission ana discharge, and the mental development of the pupils, but he had books from .which he prepared monthly financial returns.
