THE V.R.C. MEETING.

THE EVE BEFORE THE DERBY. Prat Association.— Telegraph.— Melbourne, October 28. It was raining heavily yesterday, and showery throughout the night. There is doubt about Glenloth'a two-mile gallop yesterday. The Age this morning gives the time as 3m. 38Js., but the Argus returns it as 3m. 435. The latter is most probably correct; and it should also be mentioned that the exact distance is difficult to gauge at Caulfield. Malolo and Candour are reported to be slightly lame, and in consequence the latter has receded to 10 to 1 for the Derby, for which Meli has advanced to 8 to 1. Catnoola is slightly easier for the blue riband, backers refusing to lay 5 to 4 on for more than £1000. Catnoola has eased a couple for the Cup, but Malvolio remains firm at 100 to 12. Clonard has been supported to win £6000 at 100 to 5, The Admiral £4000 at the same price, and Ronda £5000 at 100 to 2. Frantic and Proconsul have arrived at Flemington. ACCEPTANCES. W. Pearson's b c Wolf, by CommotionQuality Royal Later. Goldtop, Mainstay, and Royal are doubtful starters for the Derby, for which backers refuse to lay odds on Camoola. The best offer about Meli is 7 to 1, while Candour has advanced again to Bto 1. Malvolio is a pronounced favourite for the Cup at 100 to 14, A number of prominent owners were present at Flemington this afternoon to witness Cook's, Gollan's, Redfearn's aud James Wilson's horses exercise. Both The Captain and The Admiral look perfect pictures, the Cup horse being especially muscular. Despite the prejudicial reports of Caulfield touts, Tirailleur presents a trained appearance, being playful as a two-year-old. Sternchaser also reflects much credit on his trainer. Malvolio and Correze having had all superfluous flesh removed, look extremely fit, and so does Azim. Drizzling rain is falling, and there is every prospect of a dirty night. THE MIDDLE PARK PLATE. Press Association.—Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. London, October 28. The Newmarket Houghton meeting was continued to-day. The following was the result of the race for The Middle Park Plate of 500sovs. For two-year-olds; colts, Bst 101b; geldings, Bst 71b Bretby Stakes course. MEETING Christchurch, Friday. Although the sky was cloudy this morning, the weather was delightfully warm, and training operations were fairly interesting. Awarua Rose galloped once round the plough at top speed, with the assistance of Kotuteu for the first six furlongs. Crown Jewel, who performed a sweating gallop yesterday afternoon, travelled two rounds at three-quarter pace. Flinders, Launceston, and Captive each ran once round at a strong pace. ' St. Hippo, with neck-sweaters, had the assistance of The Dancer in a strong gallop once round the plough, both horses moving very freely. Merganser covered two rounds steadily. Wakawatea galloped once round the tan at a strong pace; Lady Thornton worked steadily, and St. Cecilia finished fast at the end of a steady gallop once round. Wyvern did one round of the tan steadily, Cynisca was anxious to increase the pace in a gallop of nearly a mile and a - half at three - quarter speed, ' and Merrie England and Vogengang cantered to the twomile post, and then travelled the Cup distance at a good pace. Both horses moved freely. Diadem and Kulnine galloped a mile fast, and Rosefeldt and Strephon t> after covering one round steadily, went in for another at a strong pace. Clanranald cantered on the plough, and did a strong gallop over the mile and a-quarter, and Crackshot worked slowly twice round. Mars and Thame, the latter of whom appears very much on the light side, cantered. Morion and the Marquis of Tewkesbury cantered one round, and Quadrant accomplished similar exercise on the grass. The racehorses Boulanger, Vivat, Balfour, and Westmere were landed at Lyttelton this morning from the Penguin. A horse named Mack having won the Spring Handicap at Tahuna Park Trotting Races, near Dunedin, yesterday, a P^? 1 * 8 , was entered that his" running in the Novel Race, earlier in the day, was suspicious, xc was dismissed; but J. McAllen, the owner of the'horse, was subsequently disqualified for twelve months, "jj '■"'', ffl ...; Mli ii At the Wellington Trotting Club'"Meet--1 ing at Island Bay, yesterday Clyde, a Nelson horse, who won the Club's Handicap in saddle travelled the dsj tance, two miles and a-half, inita. 68*., thus lowering the New Zealand record.
